Finding the Niles Hotel was a happy chance. Their sister hotel in the more touristic Sultan Ahmet region was full. We were not disappointed. Quite the reverse. We had an excellent stay.
Although difficulties at the airport delayed our arrival, we were met by our pre-arranged taxi (very reasonably priced). In half an hour we were being warmly welcomed by Seda - one of the most impressive receptionists I have had the pleasure to come across. Our room was simple, but it was comfortable, very clean with a more than adequate shower-room and a (free) safe. Although deep in the Istanbul rag-trade district, the street was very quiet at night. The aircon worked well and our four nights at the Niles were restful.
Upstairs, on the roof garden, the service was impeccable, with free tea, coffee and juice and swift service for other essentials, like beer. The fresh orange juice was . . . just perfect.
Breakfast was well organised and although busy, the food was plentiful and there always seemed to be a table. The view of the Sea of Marmara was a joy and the street scenes from this rooftop endlessly fascinating.
The hotel is usefully about 4 minutes from a tram stop. On the road with the trams, follow in the direction of Sultan Ahmet for about 100 metres and turn right down a pedestrianised shopping street. Here you will find the Sar restaurant. This is perfect for a quick salad lunch or more substantial kebabs. (Wine and beer served with a smile!) If you wish for shoes, handbags, leather jackets or briefcases, this is the area to shop. We found Santana to be excellent (1 minute from Niles Hotel).
Seda provided valuable guidance about how to get around and booked us into two excellent restaurants (Rami and also Hamdi Et Lokantasi) with brilliant views.
In its range, this is as good an hotel as I have stayed at. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
