“Great Service, wonderful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

We stayed 3 nights at the Tan hotel, and were not disappointed. The service at the front desk was wonderful, the terrace breakfast was great, with eggs prepared freshly any way you wanted. The location is perfect for all the touristy things, a short walk to the Grand Bazaar, very close to the Blue Mosque, and the hop of/ hop off bus tours. Our room was very clean, and relatively quiet considering the area is quite busy in the evenings. Many restaraunts and shops near by. Istanbul is a fascinating city, this is a perfect location to stay.

We were very impressed with the Tan Hotel while staying in Istanbul - great location, helpful and friendly staff, comfortable and clean rooms but when we had our wallet stolen on our last day, hotel staff were absolutely amazing and went out of their way to help and support us during this stressful time - from free phone calls to Australia to cancel credit cards, to reporting incident to police and transporting us to police station and staying with us during this initial stage and translating for us. Later that day, police contacted the hotel, who in turn contacted us, to inform us they had found person (foreigner) responsible for stealing our and others money/goods. Hotel staff stayed with us throughout the entire next stage of police process (which took 5 hours) and then drove us to the airport so we wouldn't miss our flight. Wonderful hotel, wonderful breakfast on roof terrace, wonderful staff, wonderful city! We have no hesitation in rating and recommending the Tan Hotel very, very highly.

Room Tip: We stayed in 2 rooms during our 2 stays in Istanbul and both were fantastic - great value for money...

We booked this hotel for our time in Istanbul as part of our Honeymoon. After a very long flight with delays we finally arrived, very tired, at Tan hotel in the early hours of the morning expecting a 4 star hotel. When we arrived at our room we found it was very far from it. The rooms were very dated, our bed was two single beds put together with 2 individual quilts and sheets and a bed spread covering everything to make it into one bed. We were appalled and my wife broke down in tears upon seeing all this. The shower had hardly any pressure and the water was warm but far from hot.

The next morning I went downstairs and confronted the staff asking how they justified this hotel having a four star rating, that we were here on our honeymoon and so far we were very dissatisfied with our experience. After they explained that they were a boutique hotel that they didn't come under the same rating system that regular hotels are rated on they offered to upgrade us to a suite, which I accepted. The suite was more or less the same decor, however was larger and had a small living area with lounges to watch TV on - and the bed was one mattress as opposed to two singles. Although this wasn't a major improvement it was an improvement and helped us enjoy our stay a little more.

Aside from this the hotel was in a fantastic location (only a minute walk from the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the tram line that takes you all over Istanbul). Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was plentiful and as for the view of the Blue Mosque, I could enjoy that every morning for the rest of my life.

The staff were very helpful and If we needed any information or assistance they did everything they could to help.

All in all, cosmetically the hotel is in major need of an update (and the plumbing as well while they're at it) but aside from that, not bad but definitely not great.

We spent 3 nights at this hotel in July. It is in a fantastic location on a quiet street near to the major sights eg Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace etc and the tram stop. On arrival, we were told we had been upgraded to a suite and when our daughter expressed delight at this, she and her friend were offered one too. The staff were unfailingly polite, kind and helpful. Breakfast on the roof terrace was a highlight for us; the weather was really hot while we were there but the terrace is well shaded and breezy. I would go back on any future stays in Istanbul.

Was impressed with the overall experience we had in this hotel. The hotel was kind enough to upgrade us to a suite! Wifi in the room was excellent. Had jacuzzi in our bathroom. Location was superb, Sultanahment station was just 50 meters away from the hotel. There are many restaurants nearby and within walking distance to most attractions (namely grand bazaar, blue mosqua, hagia sophia).

Concierge staff were friendly and helpful.

Breakfast did not disappoint....had freshly squeezed orange juice and cooked eggs on order.

Would definitely return to this hotel :)

Had a very pleasant stay in this hotel that lived up to everything we wanted. Without paying for the 5 star accommodation of the more expensive hotels in the area, this gave us a perfect location right in the heart of busy Sultanahmet at a very reasonable price. The reception were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was simple but filling and good quality. The room itself was a little tired but nothing that you couldn't overlook and the bedsheets were white and very clean.

The little terrace on the 5th floor has a lovely but slightly obscured view of the blue mosque and the Bosporus but with free tea (20+ varieties) and coffee all day, this was a lovely place to relax before heading out to dinner in the evening.

Room Tip: We booked a double but were upgraded to a suite without asking for it. The suites on her 4th floor...

We booked the hotel after recommendations in Lonely Planet. We arrived from Antayla into Attaturk airport and it cost us 4 Turkish lira to travel to the hotel via the trams. The transfer probably took 30 minutes which is less than by car apparently!! It's super easy to do. We only had two full days in Istanbul and wanted to be close to the action. The hotel did not disappoint. It's literally a two minute walk from the Sultanhamet tram stop and 5-10 minutes from the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. There are (despite what Lonely Planet says) some fantastic restaurants in the area. Mosaik and Khaoisai (sorry for the probably incorrect spelling) are worth a mention and a 3-4 minute walk away.

Check in was easy and we were shown to our double room. As had been promised in the lonely planet the room was spacious and the bathroom large. The room was clean but not the most fashionably decorated. I don't think it matters....you aren't in Istanbul to stay in your room. There was a mini bar but they charged 5 TRY for a fanta. You can get the same in the newsagents on your way to the hotel. We would call in after a day sightseeing and buy beers/fanta to drink as we were getting ready to go out. The bathroom was large and had a jacuzzi. It was clean and the towels were fine. My only complaint was that there was no top sheet between the bottom linen and the thicker duvet. It was quite hot, despite us ramping up the air conditioning and the thick covers irritated my skin. We had room 401. The view was a bit rubbish from the room but the room itself was fine.

Breakfast was fab (fresh juice, breads, meats and omelettes). We also had drinks on the terrace when it becomes a bar one evening as the last call to prayer was being rung out. There is free tea and coffee all day. The night sky of Istanbul is stunning.

One evening worthy of mention was when we took the funicular from the tram stop by the river. It's only 5 minutes from the hotel and we went up to Beyoglu. Fantastic. It was full of local Turks having fabulous dinners in local restaurants. The food was fantastic and it was nice to see more of the real Istanbul. The funicular is 5 TRY for a return.

We also took public transport to the other airport (Sabiha Gokcen) for 10 TRY each (one of the hotel staff was trying to flog us a 60 Euro trip...no thanks. One of the other members of staff translated the local websites so we knew boat times). On the note of hotel staff, one in particular was also pushy regarding a boat trip for 35 Euro each for 90 minutes. We got the same boat trip for 10 TRY (less than 4 Euros) at the river kiosk. Anyway...to take public transport to Sabiha Gokcen take the tram to the river and then a boat to Karakoy. We then took the air conditioned Havras bus for 8 TRY but you can also get the E10 for 5 TRY. They run every 10-20 minutes and we made it to the airport in 90 minutes. It would have taken that in a taxi!
