I had wanted to experience a Hamam while in Turkey. I read reviews and decided on Cagaloglu Baths. I was apprehensive at first, being a bigger guy, that their tiny towels wouldn't cover me. No problem. I walked in, they pointed to a card on the counter that listed several different options in different languages and currency. I don't remember which one I chose but it was one of the more expensive. I think about 60 Euro.
First of all I have never been to a spa at all. So this was going to be a first regardless of what happened. After choosing they directed me to a small room, gave me a key and told me to change out of my clothes and into the towel. They brought a larger towel that wrapped around me at least twice. Once my things were locked, I was lead into the Hamam and was struck by how beautiful it was. All marble, and over 300 years old. It looks old, and I liked that. The attendance directed me to a small room to just relax. He said he'd be back in 10 minutes. The room is also all marble and the benches and walls are very warm. In no time you begin to sweat, but not like a steam bath sweat, but a slow, easy sweat. Hard to explain. My cares started to leave my body. I almost fell asleep. After what was probably 15 or 20 minutes the attendant returned, this time dresses as I (in a towel) and directed me to the large marble table in the center of the room.
Others have described the process probably better than I can so I'll just leave it that it was an experience worth having. I would do it again in a heart beat and if ever find myself in Istanbul, this will be my first stop.
The people were friendly, there is a nice little gift shop so I bought a few things for friends back home. It was such a great experience that I was relaxed for days after. The smell of the soap is intoxicating (i'm not a lover of strong smells) and it lingers on your skin for the entire day.
If you have any doubts, don't. It's worth it. It's fun, it's an experience. Yes, you are naked, but no one cares. And for a guy who doesn't have a great body, I felt completely at ease!
