Booked w/ Marriott points, but still got upgraded as a Gold member. The room, although quite small, and actually the smallest Renaissance I've ever stayed, was still pretty nice w/ direct view of Bosphorus and the bridge connecting two continents. It would have been even more spectacular if the window could be cleaner. Honestly, the hotel itself surly represents a Renaissance with design and details. I read quite a lot reviews before about the "Gone forever" Lounge, and how the management team lack of experience in acknowledging loyal elite members. But based on this real stay, I could see the improvement and the effort.
Breakfast was free as compensation. A "Elite Zone" was marked from the lobby bar to provide snacks and lite bite during 6-8pm. As for the drink, still two drinks per night printed in the voucher. One more thing that can be done better, is the internet. Unlike in the other Marriott hotels, I just got two codes that can connect to the internet for free, from One device Each time!
Given the location, it's not a best choice for travelers who love old town. You have to take a cab to connect tram in Kabatas, which is about 12-15 lira. But to get back to hotel, especially during the peak hours, nothing can be more difficult. Tram and metro is a good choice in Istanbul, to save both time and money. Everyone, including the concierge would recommend Istanbul Card, that can get discount upon transfer, and easy to top-up in every station. The card itself costs 6 lira. And the concierge also has some cards available that you could purchase. One thing that I can't understand is that the hotel sells the card at 15 lira, even there is 4 lira prepaid amount in the card. The extra 5 lira looks like nothing, but it would have shown the guests more consideration and thoughtfulness from the hotel if things can be done differently.
I'm not sure whether it's a common case for Istanbul, or just this hotel in particular. The hospitality, or in another word, the attention from the higher managing people, cannot compete with other upscale hotels in other cities. From the first step out of the cab, till the request for an earl grey during breakfast, you could see people in black suit w/ hotel management title wandering and doing nothing but staring at you, leaving the inadequate concierge or waiters busier and busier. Actually, I felt the same thing in another non-marriott five stars in Istanbul.
