“Great location... basic hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

Despite enjoying our stay at the Marbien, some points are worth noting. Some rooms, especially those interconnecting, have no windows - at all. They are also very small indeed, although the space has been fairly well utilised. There is no roof terrace, as common in many other hotels, a considerable minus in a place such as Istanbul, with its magnificent views. However, the staff are very helpful and charming, and the breakfast is very well appointed. The location close to the tram makes it handy for visiting many attractions.

Myself and my wife have just stayed for 2 nights at the Marbien Hotel in Istanbul. This hotel has such great potential and unfortunately needs to do a lot more work.
Pro's
Excellent location on the coast
Staff are mostly very friendly and helpful
Faruk and Cem have excellent English and are very helpful. In fact I spoke with Faruk about my concerns before I left and was very understanding and accepted my comments without question
Very good breakfast
Very nice bathrooms

Con's
Woken up very early in the morning by noisy cleaning staff. Service door outside our room was very noisy.
No tea/coffee making facilities although to be fair Faruk told me they have plans to introduce this next month.
No iron or ironing board this was a major issue we felt. Especially for business clients.
I ordered laundry service and it must be in by 9 am or you get charged 150%. I deliberately woke up at 8:30 in order to get the bellboy to collect it before 9 am. I had to make 3 phone calls for someone to finally collect my laundry just before 9am. The laundry is meant to be back by 7pm the same day I returned at 9pm that evening and there was no laundry. I had to go down myself and collect it.
The next day I wanted a massage. The hours of opening are from 10am - 10pm. I booked a massage the night before for 10am the next day. In the morning I was at the spa at 9:55 nobody was there all closed up. I waited until 10:15 and then went back to my room to call reception. They told me masseuse was not there come back at 11am!!
I think all the rooms are twin beds and they push them together if you ask. Although the duvet doesn't fit the 2 beds together so you end up with two duvets that overlap each other.
As previously said although the rooms are new they are very small and already we noticed some chippings in the wood. Only time will tell but we suspect the finish may get worse very quickly.

ALSO NOTE: This hotel is a dry hotel no alcohol is served here. This was not an issue for my wife and I and Faruk did say it was advertised on the website as such. However it is worth noting in case some people want to have a glass of wine or a beer at night to relax.

Overall a very average hotel that promises a lot but sadly doesnt deliver on those promises. They try to offer a lot of services a 4/5 star hotel would offer but they don't deliver them. It almost feels they are "punching a little above their weight"! Either offer services to a good standard or dont bother a halfway house if no good.

In saying this however if you need somewhere to rest for a night or so it will most certainly do. It's clean, comfortable and friendly. If you want a
finer standard of accomodation where attention to detail and customer care is important to you then try somewhere else like we were forced to do.

Excellent alternative to Sultanahmet, close enough to all the action on the Taksim side of the Golden Horn. TL5 cab ride uphill to Istaklal, with all the food/bar delights of Nevizade Sokak and surroundings very close at hand. Quick route in from airport, around 35 mins (in light traffic). Rooms not huge, but new and balcony faces Bosphorus with Ortakoy & bridge in one direction, Topkapi Palace in the other. Bathrooms dark marble, with rain shower accompanied by funky 'mood' lighting, plus a privacy blind that when open allows views from shower to Leander Tower.

Their roof terrace restaurant is yet to open - when it does, it should add hugely to what is already a very agreeable modern style hotel. Breakfast in ground level area provides a mix of hot and cold buffet, with choice of breads, juices, eggs, yogurt, nuts, fruit etc. No complaints.

Recommended, especially if in Istanbul for just a couple of nights as we were.

Room Tip: Bosphorus facing rooms a must.

Agree with most reviews. Staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming, which makes the stay very enjoyable. People and service there is the biggest draw of this hotel. The hotel is located right at Findikli tram stop, which is 6 stops from Sultanamet on T1 Tram line which is very convenient for sightseeing. Also only one stop away with Katabas Port for ferries (for Princess Island) or funicular to Taksim Square. Trams does get very busy, so family using prams would have to think twice about this hotel because I personally think is not practical to travel on Trams with prams. Anyway, being on Findikli also means that you can travel to/from airport with just one change, it takes about 1 hr 20mins.

Breakfast is also excellent, is the same every morning but lots of choices and tasty. Room are clean and decent size.

Couple of negatives: 1. Their roof top restaurant is closed, was looking forward to have a roof top meal in Istanbul. Very limited choices of dinner around the area, but at least the room service is decent. 2. The finishing of the hotel can be better, being fairly new now, everything still looks good, but I can already see some chippings on tables/wardrobes, showers can leak out to the floor etc. so worry that the conditions of the hotel would deteriorate in a few years time. I truly hope that they can keep up the good work as is a great place to stay.

Last tip on the area, we found a local lunch place (if you are late starter like us) .. Findikcafe (http://www.findikcafe.com/restaurant/index.html). Tasty and simple food, good value and not the typical touristy turkish food. One of our best meal in Istanbul.

Room Tip: Best room is still facing Bosphorus, The 3 beds room are roomy and nice, though if you are on 1st le...

We stayed at the Marbien Hotel Bosphorus twice (July 2012 and August 5, 2012) during our stay in Istanbul. This brand new boutique hotel provides an oasis from the chaotic city of Istanbul. Faruk and the rest of the staff provide excellent customer service. We left our luggage as we travelled around Turkey. I highly recommend this hotel.

Pros: Excellent staff, location and views of the Bosphorus. It is CLEAN. The food is delicious and reasonably priced in the beautiful restaurant. Try the Turkish dessert. When the roof top restaurant is open, they will have the most fantastic view of Istanbul.

Cons: Avoid the taxis, if you can.

Take the air conditioned tram (Findikli stop across from the hotel) to Sultanahmet; Blue Mosque; Hagia Sophia; Cistern Basilica, Karakoy, Spice and Grand Bazaar. It is very easy to use. Cost 2TL per token. The token machine is located on the other side of the tram and be very careful crossing the street, it’s a blind corner. No one stops.

There are many banks to convert your money to Turkish Lira (open Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm); pharmacy; ice cream/ dessert shop (5 minute walk) and newsstand on the corner, you can buy water for 0.50TL. Don’t buy baklava from sweet shop beside the hotel; it’s not good. Go to the world famous Karakoy Gulluoglu.

Transfers to and from the hotel can be arranged for 60 Euro or 70USD.

Thank you to Faruk and the staff at the Marbien, well done.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the Bosphorus.
