“Good value for money & location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

The staff were very friendly and I enjoyed the atmosphere & decor of the hotel. There is a terrace bar with wonderful views across the city at the top of the building. The location is very central and a 10min or so walk from Taksim Square. The hotel offered very good value for money & I would stay here again if returning to Istanbul for a city break.

That being said, get a room here before this hotel is completely renovated - I suggest the Orient Express Room (view of the Golden Horn, balcony, plus AC - I hear the cheap rooms don't have AC). The nearby Pera Palace was once in the same catagory as the Grand Hotel de Londres, now that's been renovated and the rooms are quite expensive - I'd be staying there if I had the money. Walking into the Grand Hotel you are greeted by a sweeping flight of red-carpeted stairs...mirrors, gold leaf, heavy velvet curtains and crystal chandeliers are everywhere - it's like checking into a hotel in a spy thriller - be warned, Agatha Christie wrote about the now vanished Tokatalian Hotel in several works (including Murder on the Orient Express) not this place or the Pera Palace. Our room was huge, bathroom had recently been renovated - took a little time for the hot water to come up - and we had a view of the Golden Horn. The rooftop terrace is the best part of the hotel - hipster hangout for young well-heeled Stamboulis - if this was New York you wouldn't be allowed up there unless you greased some bouncers palm or were accompanying some supermodel and her entourage (again, if they renovate, and it's only a matter of time, the rooftop terrace will be practically impossible to crash). The noise in the district is something to consider - the pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi is right behind it and it's a nonstop party, a veritable carnival of up-all-nighters, but at least you will be steps away from the restaurants and the shops. Overall, the staff was cool, the rooms were clean, and we always had fresh towels. I'd definitely recommend staying here if you are into a historical hotel - albeit one that has seen better days, but the glamor is still there, even if it's a bit faded. Make sure you check out the parrot in the grand salon!

Room Tip: Orient Express Room all the way - splurge before this hotel gets outrageously expensive

Our host, Mr Fatih Hatay, is the most genial of hotel managers, helpful and knowledgeable, as are all the staff here. I have been coming to the Buyuk Londra for over twenty years and can truthfully call it my home from home in Istanbul. This hotel is like a familiar old armchair into which I can sit back and let go of the stress and noise of busy Istanbul.

Büyük Londra Oteli is a very nice place, a historical one.. Every corner here has antıques, so it feels like you are actually staying in a museum & not a usual hotel
The hotel has different room types, and so are price ranges. so, you are going to find the suitable one for you.
Location is also perfect, you are only few meters from İstikalal Cad., the beautiful Pera Museum- A must visit- as well as Galata Tower
Breakfast is good & I enjoy their coffee here, but it is the same everyday.. I think if there is some change it can be even more interesting.. Make sure to visit the roof-top bar, the view is amazing :)
Staff is very friendly, cheerful and eager to help you out.
I would say this hotel is a hidden beauty & a bit underrated.. I would highly recommend it myself :)

Room Tip: Economy rooms dont have an AC, just a fan.. So, consıder this point ;)

Just a hundred ms to famous İstiklal Street at the commercial and cultural center of İstanbul, 19th century appearance facade, very interesting lobby with old furniture and lovely wall papers and century old illumination with very friendly staff, try the red carpet stairs while going down to breakfast which is mainly continental with self service tea&coffee what makes life easier, the roof has a capacity for 40 with Golden Horn view, neglect the heavy traffic of taxis just in a line and sleep without noise if you close the balcony door, sunshine goes in your eyes as curtains are just decoratif, the walls and ceiling are attractive in the rooms, very soft bed and pillows, aircondition works for hot June, sleepers at the bathroom which is not for obsessive compulsives, room servise quick, charges 2 euros for nonalcholic drinks,75 euros BB for each isn't cheap but worths,We took a room with a balcony and enjoyed the late hours though an aliminuim table set was real kitch.....

Room Tip: 3rd or 4rd flat as roof bar is at 5th floor and for a room with a wiev and balcony

The hotel oozes with opulent, Oriental express type history in the lobby, bar and corridors. The rooftop bar is also cool.....The rooms....well, have seen better days...the bathrooms...small and don't look very carefully at the cleanliness...showers are tiny. The location is great for people, who want to explore Istanbuls fabulous night life....but that also means very noisy neighborhood at night. Al in all a good place for the partying crowd...or bring earplugs

Con's: (room 502)
Better to put sheet and blanket under mattress at feets end
Shower very small, not much water pressure
Tap at sink needs maintenance
Curtain too short and does not darken the room
A table or desk would be useful
TV hardly works, mainly snow
Breakfast more or less OK
Coffee is horrible! Good coffee is hard to find in Istanbul
Pro's:
Nice teras, Great lobby
Very happy with the computers and printer in lobby
