My wife and I recently spent 8 nights at the Erboy. We booked through Travel Republic and paid approximately £67 a night for a standard double room and breakfast for two.
First, the positives. The hotel is well located although, to be fair, it is no better located than all of the other hotels in the same area – and there are lots of them. The breakfast was fine - a little repetitive, and we have had better fare at other 3 star hotels, but no complaints. The reception staff were friendly and helpful e.g. they changed large denomination lira notes into smaller ones and they booked restaurants for us, they arranged to have ready for our arrival 2 Museum Passes and 2 Istanbulkarts, they telephoned our Turkish transfer company to get our pick up time for us and so on.
What really disappointed us, and in fact spoilt our stay to quite an extent, was our room – number 1504 on the 5th floor.
I had read in reports that some rooms were on the small side but I did not realise just how small some were. Our room was approximately 10 feet by 9 feet (around 3m by 2.9m) with, in addition, a small built in wardrobe and a bathroom that was approximately 6 feet (1.8m) square. When you consider the room had in it a large double bed, two bedside tables and a desk with hard chair there was very little room left to move about (and very little surface space to put things on). For a short stay it would have been OK but for a longer stay, like ours, it was just too small. That apart, the room was clean, well equipped and the bed was comfortable
I had also read that internal soundproofing was not great. In fact I think it was virtually non-existent. From outside we had the constant hum of nearby air conditioning plant - that plant was actually the bulk of the view from our room (see picture). People talking on the corridor could have been talking inside our room. People banging their room doors could have been banging our door. People using the bathroom in the next room could have been using our bathroom. You get the idea! But what was even worse was that our room (and rooms 1501, 1502 and 1503) were directly below the rooftop terrace and bar. So until midnight every night, and often beyond, we could hear chairs scraping, people walking across the tiled floor, beer barrels being changed and so on.
There were other issues with the room, although they were minor in comparison. On arrival our bathroom wash basin did not have a plug. It took two requests to get one. There was no water at times coming out of the basin taps or to flush the WC. When the supply did return after a short while (a few minutes usually) the tap would gurgle and splutter suggesting an air lock somewhere. The shower sometimes went cold.
If the hotel responds to this report by saying something like ‘you should have told us and we would have moved you’ then they have completely missed the point. Room 1504 is a bad room and they would only have given it to someone else anyway.
Would we stay at the Erboy again? No, because there is a chance of getting room 1504 again (or indeed rooms 1501 to 1503). If you decide to stay there just be aware you may be the one they give those rooms to.
