I give Hotel Erboy two thumbs up and five stars – my stay here was outstanding.
Hotel Erboy is ideally located in Old Town Sultanahmet. The hotel is ½ block away from the Gulhane tram station, and is within five blocks of six of the major attractions in Istanbul (Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Istanbul Archeological Museum, Basilica Cistern and the Hippodrome). Also Gulhane Park is ½ block away, and the waterfront where you catch the ferries to Kadikoy or to take a cruise on the Bosporus is an easy five minute walk. Also, on the street where the hotel is located, there is a small market for water, juices and snacks, as well as many other souvenir shops. Also, ATM machines are ½ block away, right by the tram station.
There is nothing to dislike about this hotel, and IMHO, the service was simply superb. When I arrived, I was met and greeted by the concierge, who gave me a cup of hot apple tea and a map of the city while I waited for my room key. She also provided me with information that helped me to get my bearings. As I stayed for multiple nights, my rate included transportation to the hotel and the driver was waiting for me as soon as I exited the airport. Breakfast was also included as well as a complimentary dinner. Also, since I paid for my stay in cash, I received a 7% discount, and I was able to pay in U.S. dollars, which was very convenient.
The hotel has six floors plus a lower level where their restaurants are located. There is an outdoor terrace on the sixth floor, which was closed for the season. If, though, you wanted to take photos from the terrace of the mosques and the waterfront, there was no problem in doing so.
I originally was given Room #1407. The room was quite nice, however, I had very noisy neighbors who did not take into consideration that there were other people staying in the hotel. The next morning, I inquired at the front desk as to whether there was another room available and explained the reason for my request. Before I could get all the words out of my mouth, the clerk apologized for any inconvenience, immediately switched me to another room, #2103, and personally escorted me there. The room was just as nice as #1407, and included the same amenities, such as a writing desk, flat screen television and a small refrigerator. The bed was extremely comfortable with four nice fluffy pillows. The bathrooms in both rooms were perfectly appointed. Just be warned – for those who like washcloths, this is Europe, so there weren’t any. Water pressure in the shower was excellent, and everything was spotless.
In the lobby of the hotel are two computers for internet usage which is free of charge for hotel guests. There is also a small library with books and magazines in case you’d like something to read. Also, the hotel has an exchange desk so changing money is a very easy process. The hotel will also arrange transportation for you to the airport should you request it (25US), and again, if you stay multiple days, a one way transfer is complimentary. Also, they will arrange tours and cruises for you at your request.
The food? Perfectly fine. Breakfast was the usual Mediterranean type fare – cucumbers, olives, tomatoes, meats, cheeses, breads. Also on the menu was yogurt, fruit, muffins, cereal, eggs, and sausage - much more than enough to keep you going for the morning. As stated earlier, I had a complimentary evening meal in their Pasazade Restaurant, which I’ve reviewed separately. That meal was excellent.
Without a doubt, staying at the Hotel Erboy made my visit to Istanbul perfect. When I return, this is where I plan to stay.
