“Good but with drawbacks”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2008

Just back from a three night stay in this hotel. First impressions were good as the Reception area looked very clean and modern. Elsewhere the hotel was 'tired' and in need of redecoration. My room was very small and the decor left a lot to be desired. The most serious problems were in the bathroom. Badly broken and chiped shower which rarely worked. Also, I wasn't terribly sure if the bed clothes were clean and opted to sleep on top of the bed - thankfully it was warm enought to do that.

the hotel worthed its money, it was exactly what we wanted as far as the location is concerned, and pretty good for our budget. the proximity to istiklal cad., where a good sample of the night life was taking place, and generally to trasportation (near a bus station and the taksim metro station), was remarkable. our room was clean enough, small though and not with plenty of air (but there are rooms looking to the street, so ask for one!), but with new toilet facilities (a big plus!). The breakfast was rich, and served until 10 (i think..), which was good news! finally, the stuff was pleasant, and we had free trasfer from the airport to the hotel (but not the other way round).

The hotel has very good location - not far from the airport, close to Taxim and Istiklal Cad, but at the same time, very quiet and safe. Breakfast was excellent - fresh orange juice, lots of food - not only chees, eggs and bread.
It was clean, but our room was not big and we had horrible view - 3metres away windows of other room! But you couldnt expect for 70 $ (we paid for two people) much more.
The Internet connection is very very very bad, which was good for me - otherwise I would spend most of the time at the hotel checking something.
Staff was friendly and helpful.

Thank you for the critics.
We have solved wireless internet connection problem from rooms by new wiring, new access points and a new type of connection, which is the fastest one in turkey at the moment. (vdsl connection)
But still we recommend our guests spending time outside the hotel :))

Stayed here for a week in April while I was in Istanbul for a conference. It was reasonably clean, and the area seemed fairly safe, at least during the day. I saw policemen patrolling the area frequently. The breakfast is good, and the guys at reception were friendly and spoke English.
It is very close (~2 mins walk) to the Istiklal caddesi which has lots and lots of shops and restaurants. About a 10-15 minute walk from the fancy hotels in Taksim square.

I picked the Troya Hotel because it was cheap and close to Istiklal Cd., but I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotel. Don't get me wrong, it's not the Ritz, but it seemed like a way nicer hotel overall than would be indicated by the price. The room was huge (especially as compared to the hotel we stayed at in Sultanahmet) and actually pretty decently furnished, if you can get past the bed covers and drapes, which are a hideous rust-orange color. Luckily you could flip the bed covers over to their inoffensive black lining. As for the rest, the beds were nice and comfortable, there was a little sitting area with sofa, coffee table, and TV, and the bathroom was clean. Water pressure in the shower was terrible, but I guess you can't have everything. The staff is very nice.

The clincher on this hotel, though, is the location. It's a short block from the shopping, restaurants, and bars of Istiklal Cd., an easy walk north to Taksim Square or south to Tunel, and yet -- this is key -- just far enough away to be QUIET. One night when we were out bar hopping we passed another hotel where we had considered staying, and I thanked my lucky stars we hadn't ended up there -- it was directly on top of one of the liveliest, loudest rows of bars and clubs in Istanbul. When you are planning your trip, this sort of thing is impossible to discern from looking at a map -- some of the side streets off Istiklal Cd. are quiet, and some are lined with bars and raucous crowds that go all night. The great thing about the Troya is that you can walk out your door and be in the heart of the action in two minutes, but when you're ready to come home and sleep, you can do so in peace.

The only thing I can really complain about is the wireless internet. It sucked. Slow as molasses when it was working, and frequently down. Oh well. And I can't comment on the breakfast, because we never woke up in time to eat it (it is served 7:30-10:00 AM).

Thank you for the critics!
I want to correct one information: breakfast was until 10:30 at that time but we have now postponed it to 10:45 weekdays and 11:00 in weekends.
We also solved the internet connection problem with new wiring, access points and so on which I explained in one of the next posts.
Hope to see you again!

Before going on my trip to Istanbul I read a review of the hotel where I was staying, The Troya. Someone wrote that the breakfasts were under par, but I want to update that information. The hotel management told me that they changed the way they present breakfast now and I was very impressed. There was a long buffet that included eggs, museli, yogurt, salad, halawa, rolls, toast, cucumbers, fruit and a host of drinks including sahleb, coffee, juice, assorted teas, and milk. The breakfast, included in the price, was one of the highlights of my stay. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful as well.

The "Troya" hotel is tucked away on a small street, southwest of the Taksim square. It will take you five minutes of walking to reach the Istical Cad., with its tram, all of its shops and restaurants; and another fifteen to walk to the Taksim Square itself.

Upon arrival, I was given a single room which provided an OK standard - with a pleasant enough bathroom. The windows faced an inward shaft, with windows from the opposite side very close. The only solution was to close the curtains, and in such a small room you then soon start to feel pretty cramped.
The air-condition, although in working order, never managed to lower the temperature below about 23 Celsius; which was way to hot for me. I asked for a better situated and larger room - ufortunately, one was not available until the next day. This upgrade added about USD 35 pr night to my prepaid bill.

The new room was much larger, and had street facing windows, which came as a relief (although the street noise was considerable). Like in so many Southern European and Middle East countries, The Turks honk their
car horns violently - at any hour and in any given situation. Bring your earplugs!

The TV had mostly Turkish channels (including CNN Turk), an English movie channel(dubbed), and BBC World.

The telephone worked, but made no ringing signal when a call was connected to the room. Staff would come running, telling me that I had a call.

Breakfast was included in my rate, and was rather basic in my opinion: Hard boiled eggs, some fruit, bread, honey, jam and some cheese, coffee\tea and preserved juice. Not bad, but "rich" (as the hotel states on their internet site), is a bit of an exaggeration. The breakfast lounge is nice.

The hotel itself looks somewhat worn, with lots of brown colored panels and fabrics. It seemed reasonably clean. The staff was friendly enough, about half of them speaking English to a level where you could make yourself well understood. They arrange for airport shuttle bus, which is a nice touch.

All in all : "Troya" isn't a bad hotel, but if you're looking for a very relaxed and luxurious stay, it probably isn't the place to be. On the other hand, it's inexpensive.

Some final points:

- Consider where your interest lies - if they involve mostly history, mosques and culture, the Sulthanamet area would be a good place to look into. On the other side, if shopping and restaurants is more you preference, the Taksim \ Istical cadessi area seems to have the better selection.

- Bring your earplugs

- Get a good map (Istanbul streets can be confusing). The "Freemaps" which can be found at restaurants are fine. The ones given out at the hotel aren't nearly good enough.

- Be prepared for intense traffic and crowded streets... But most of all, enjoy your stay in the fascinating, vibrant city that is Istanbul!
