“Poor Internet connection”

The Orient Hostel

The main reason I went to the hostel was to have a quiet place to use my laptop on the Interent. I asked if they had a WIFI connection and was told they did. To make a long story short, it did not work late at night. I went to see what the problem was and, although someone tried to help me for a while, eventually he gave up and went to bed. In the morning he got defensive about it. I talked the owner and asked for a paritial refund but he didnt seem to care much. He just said it wasn't their fault. Two days later I saw another backpacker who, like me changed hostes because of the connection problems and staff's attitude. Also, like other Istanbul hostels I have seen, they don't have lockers in the rooms. They also turn off and lock up their two desktop computers during the night, and got defenisve when I told them other hostels dont do this.

We stayed for 4 nights over in early September. It was £77 for 4 nights for 2 people. The hostel itself is just SE of the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia, handily located for getting to all the touristy bits of Istanbul. It is on is a bit of a ‘backpacker’ street.

We had a 2 person room which was really small, only a few feet bigger than the double bed. There was no room for other furniture except a standing fan. The room looked over a terrace which was quite loud until late. The usual call to prayer could be clearly heard as we needed the window open as it was too stuffy otherwise. Sheets were provided and were (just about) OK.

There was a communal shower and loos which were not too bad although I am quite unfussy. They were cleaned daily and well supplied with paper etc.

There was a roof terrace and a bar floor where breakfast was served. The breakfast was quite poor. There was lots of bread and a small portion of jam, processed cheese and butter, a over-boiled egg, a few slices of cucumber and tomato and one cup of coffee (you had to pay for more). They were quite keen on putting MTV on as people ate breakfast thus loosing the romance of the sun rising over the city.

They served food which looked OK but we did not have and beers for a reasonable price 5YTL for ½ ltr. There were internet facilities which were reasonably cheap.

My girlfriend and I stayed in Orient in March. The room we had was with ensuite bathroom and overlooking the sea. Eventhough it was a hostel, the room was very clean. The breakfast was very good included in the price. We had some meals in the terrace restaurant, the food was more ta-han satisfactory. The reception and the travel guy was very helpful and friendly. They made our stay very enjoyable.
It is a great place to stay...

Our stay there was really disapointing. We booked with www.iyhf.org. When we arrived, our reservation was writen down, but they were used our rooms for other guest, so they chaged our 2 double rooms for a 4 people room, and They charge us the same amount of money. According to them it was their fault but our "new" room had a "bathroom". Next day they change us to 2 double rooms, one with a big spot of humidity, bad smelling and with sheets full of holes. The other was dry until.... there was a leakage of water from somewhere and all the floor were flooded.
The breakfast was a rip-off, only a tea with some bread with honey and butter or with an omelette.
And if you are thinking about enjoying the roof "restaurant" views, forget it. you can see only the rest of roofs, and they aren´t that beautiful.
Sumarizing: the worse hostel I have ever been in.
