First, I must write that our ten nights as guests at the Empress Zoe were wonderful.
My husband and I are in our seventies. I emailed the Empress Zoe our concerns, stairs and walk in shower being primary. I immediately received an email addressing our concerns with solutions. I booked a double room with a balcony overlooking the garden with only two flights of stairs easy enough to negotiate. Our room became our quiet, comfy refuge within a very vibrant city.
The staff at the Empress Zoe were extraordinary. The men who carried our bags and cleaned our room were especially endearing with their smiles and graciousness. Staff at the desk who we saw everyday were friendly and informative especially Binnur who encouraged and gave us confidence to travel further outside the Sultanahmet giving us tram, bus and ferry routes. The young man who tended the drinks bar in the afternoon was friendly and happy to talk with us about our daily experiences and adventures. He also made a wicked lemonade, very special.
And, oh, the cats! Not only at the Empress Zoe but all over Istanbul.
Breakfast was a treat. I still think about the huge juicy figs and fresh made yogurt.
When in Rome you hear church bells ringing morning and evening. Istanbul you hear the call to prayer from the mosques, one close to the Empress Zoe. Both cities, to me, are defined by by these calls to worship, all the sounds of worship are beautiful.
