We have just stayed five nights’ at Ayasofya Hotel and would unreservedly recommend this Hotel.
Owned and managed by Australian Gaye Reeves, Gaye is a very helpful and professional hotelier who brings an owner-operators' touch to the business--a big plus today.
Situated in Sultanahmet, the historic quarter of Istanbul, sitting cheek and jowl with numerous four and five story vintage buildings of similar style on an uneven cobblestone street, the Ayasofya exudes a charm and quaintness of old Istanbul.
Since this was our first visit to Istanbul we opted for the hotel to arrange our transfer.
The airport pickup was seamless. A good start !
We had booked a Standard Room (wi-fi and breakfast inclusive) and on arrival were shown a clean and rather smallish room on the second floor. The AC worked well, the bathroom was very clean and the water pressure in the taps was good. The wi-fi signal was very strong. However, my wife and I decided that since we were staying five nights, we would prefer something a bit larger.
Gaye was extremely obliging and without hesitation, she showed us three additional empty Standard Rooms varying in sizes and outlooks. We were very impressed with all of the rooms’ presentation and cleanliness.
Chatting to Gaye, we learnt that the suite adjoining the rooftop bar was also vacant. Seizing upon the opportunity we negotiated a discounted rate and promptly settled in to a very large room with an enormous bathroom and veranda with a 180 degree ocean view.
Our room was cleaned daily and fresh towels were supplied; the standard of cleaning was excellent. The breakfast consisted of cereals, dried and fresh fruit, eggs, a selection of cheese, cold cuts, jams including vegemite, white and brown bread. The front office staff were very polite and helpful, the supporting staff extremely efficient.
The Ayasofya is not the Four Seasons or the Hyatt, but for those looking for a "heritage” property experience in the old city of Sultanahmet, I would highly recommend it.
Thank you Gaye. My wife and I will definitely be back.
