“Small tired room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

On arriving the hotel looks lovely, reception area is large and has beautiful marble flooring. It was an excellent location, just around the corner from Taksim Square and Gezi Park
Our room was tiny and very 'tired' with a badly stained carpet, but at last we had a double bed.....possibly the only one in the whole of Turkey!! This was our seventh hotel in 12 days and we had almost begun to think that we had only dreamed of double beds and they were really a myth. On closer inspection we found that we had two singles pushed together, not a problem you would think, except that to do this they had removed the bedside table and the electric socket for the light and the phone lead now stuck out from the bed and were tucked under my pillow!! If the beds had still been two singles I'm not sure that I would have been able to open the wardrobe doors as the room was so small. There was only one very small luggage rack and I'm sure most couples have two cases, the other had to go on top of the minibar shelf as there wasn't even room on the floor for it.
Our room overlooked the side street that led to most of the eating places but was very quiet as it was traffic-free and lined with beautiful trees.
The breakfast room was a bit shabby and the buffet area was far too small to cope with the large numbers of guests, dinner was not included so I cannot comment.
There was no iron in the room and when my husband went to reception to ask, no iron was available and they looked at him as if he had asked them to do his ironing for him.

On the whole, a well appointed hotel. Our bedroom was small but had a proper double bed and a small en suite. Almost impossible to find an English programme on the television. Why do these hotels assume that two people will only have one case? Breakfast was good, but the very slow toaster merely warmed the bread!

Close to Taksim square, nice central position, we stayed 3 nights as part of an organised tour of Turkey. Good room size, 3 beds, good size bathroom, excellent shower, TV, minibar, hairdryer, kettle/ tea/ coffee. (although another couple in our group said their bathroom was tiny and they struggled to shower in it). Our room was very clean and everything was as it should be, full marks to our very attentive and friendly maid. Our room had no outlook, just out onto next tenement, I guess to be expected in a city centre location. Good restaurant, quick and friendly service, breakfast was fair selection, though as with the rest of our tour, poor selection of cereals and fruit, which is inexcusable when you see how much good and fresh local fruit there is in the markets. This was one of the few hotels that we stayed in that had decided summer had arrived and had turned on the central aircon system - overall a good comfortable stay. While we were there, they had some protests in Taksim square due to the miners disaster, but we saw and heard nothing

Room Tip: We had room 1310 and was good and roomy

Situated within a block of Taksim Square, in a pedestrianised area, the location is fine. We were there when there was a demonstration going on over the mine disaster and the police were using water cannon in the square but we were totally unaffected by it.

Thankfully the air conditioning was working so it was quiet and comfortable. However, the room was not properly cleaned, there was rubbish under the bed and a wrapper under the sink in the bathroom.

The hotel has a lovely terrace restaurant on the roof looking out to the old city and you can see the Agia Sofia and Blue Mosque from there. Unfortunately, it was closed on the first and last night of our stay, and they didn't tell anyone it was open on the other night. The breakfast room was quite small and the food choice was limited, if somewhat bizarre. I can't say that I would choose broccoli in tomato sauce even as an experience, but, perhaps, it is a Turkish delicacy.

Spent 2nights here at late Apr. As the temperature started to rise, hotel told that central conditioning is off, the thermostat is basically useless. Throughout our stay, we need to either endure the warmth in the room or the blasting noises from the street (need to open the window to let cool air in), hence, we didnt have good rest here.
The room was very small that comparable to Hong Kong standard. Had great difficulty getting into shower screen for my size that is considered small. Breakfast was mediocre and rooftop pool was probably closed as the water was brownish.
The plus side: the room amenities were quite complete and its proximity to the taksim square.
However, due to the poor sleep quality we had, wont recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you check whether there is air condiotioning during spring time.

A confessional: I didn't stay in this hotel; my fiance's parents did after one had a bad fall and was in a wheelchair. The hotel staff bent over backwards to ensure her comfort for four days while we sorted out medical treatment and flights home to Canada. I can't say enough of how brilliant the service and staff were at Taksim Gonen. It's cafe downstairs also serves excellent food and has lovely, helpful staff, and its rooftop restaurant might be one of Istanbul's best-kept secrets. But most of all, the kindness and hospitality of the staff was remarkable, and deserves to be noted.

My in-laws did say that it was also the best sleep they had in Istanbul, compared to other Taksim hotels on main streets. Gonen is tucked away from Taksim Square at the intersection of two small streets, and unlike some hotels in the city has insulated glass to block out the noise from down below. Their room was on the first floor and the city's racket disappeared completely.

I could not in all honesty recommend this place, its a lovely new building close to the airport but that is its only advantage. On arrival there was no assistance with luggage, check in was chaotic to say the least- a strange thing in this hotel that no staff actually address the customer the people behind reception are at all time on the phone, speaking with each other or shouting over customers- its really unpleasant. Phone did not work in the room for room service. On checkout I was met with much the same chaos and again offered no assistance with luggage. Checkout was frantic and I had an extremely rude young girl who was shouting at a colleague while I checked out. Its very unprofessional- the staff really let this otherwise potentially good hotel down. Food was good here.
