My husband and I spent 5 wonderful days/nights at Dersaadet Oteli in June 2007. I first saw the hotel mentioned in Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, Nov. 2006 list of “50 Utterly Charming Hotels Around $100.” I checked out the reviews on Trip Advisor , what a great resource and thanks for the suggestions which we took…. upgrading to a sea view room on a higher floor for a better view, and asking for a mattress cover for the hard bed.
Our room was very clean and comfortable, and, from the moment we arrived until our departure, the hotel staff, especially Front Office Manager Umit Ciftci and Billur looked after our every need. We casually mentioned one morning that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and that evening a fruit plate and bottle of wine were waiting for us when we returned from a day of sightseeing.
Our flight left before the breakfast room opened but staff provided us with coffee and cake at 6:30 am.
The hotel is in a non-tourist neighborhood, with a local barbershop, laundry, convenience store, and small car repair shop nearby. Still, we were only a few minutes away from the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, and Blue Mosque. Breakfasts were provided in the rooftop terrace, which has spectacular views of the Marmara Sea and the Blue Mosque. The free use of the computer in the lobby was a great way to keep in touch with our family. Free airport pick up if you stay more than three nights is a plus.
Don’t miss the Basilica Cistern. What a unique site. We also enjoyed the Sunday night 6 pm free concert by the Mehter Military Band in front of the Hagia Sophia. We visited the Jewish Museum in Zulfaris Synagogue and then walked back across the bridge to the spice market and had lunch at Hamdi Restaurant, great view and delicious pistachio kebabs.
We enjoyed dinner at the “Blue House,” near the hotel, with a fabulous view of the Blue Mosque. One night the hotel made a reservation for us at the Develi (the restaurant picks you up and brings you back) for another good meal on a rooftop restaurant. The dessert Kunefe, fine baked noodles with cheese in hot syrup was fabulous.
Istanbul is a vibrant, beautiful city with lots to see and do. The atmosphere of staying in a 19th Century ottoman house and the wonderful staff of the Hotel Dersaadet enhanced our stay beyond measure.
