The wife and me stayed at dersaadat for 5 days in december (room 402). We have travelled a lot and stayed in quite a few hotels but it is our first time in Istanbul. Backpacing is not an option (says the wife)so most of the hotels have been 3-4 stars. The thing about hotels is,there are two ways they dissappoint. The first, when the service is poor, the place unsanitary and amenities and location are lousy. The second is when the the clients expectations are not matched The latter is not always the hotels fault. It can do the best job within its parameters but still not satisfy. The dersaadat falls in the second category.
ITs not a bad hotel but tripadvisor raises the bar significantly in terms of expectations. Also it is my first time in turkey and this is the only hotel i stayed in so i dont know what the others are like. Please bear that in mind when reading this review.
The hotel's plus points - Pick up from the airport was punctual and spot on, check in was quick and hassle free, staff was polite, courteous and friendly (service with a smile), breakfast (i am a HUGE breakfast man) was brilliant(meat, eggs, homemade jams, cereals etc) and the terrace breakfast venue is a delight. The blue mosque and the sea of marmara greet you in the morning at breakfast. Location was perfect. Free internet from a computer in the lobby( no wifi) but are you really going to be surfing the net in a city like istanbul?! Room cleaning was done promptly. The hotel was an old mansion at one time so it could be called old or vintage (depending on perspective). Some might like it for that and some might not.We thought 'charecter'
The negative points - the room was a bit small,my room had wallpaper peeling, the A/c blower was NOISY.We turned it off and had to open the windows (it was not that cold in turkey, by our standards) only to let in the noises of the street. We did bring it to the attention of the recepetion but not much was (or maybe could be) done. BUT the worst thing was the BED. Very uncomfortable. WE could feel our backs complain in the morning for the 5 days we were there. TV lacks any REAL channels for the non-turkish speaker( but again its istanbul!)
In summary, i would not stay here if it was summer (A/c issues) and the bed was the same (at that price) but other wise we thought it was good. We grade it B+
