Just came back from Istanbul where we had stayed at the Uyan Hotel. We checked out early. We are not high maintenance travelers, can be comfortable most anywhere in the world and make the best of most situations - The staff was friendly, but we had problems from the start: There was no phone service outgoing/incoming so we could not make or recieve calls due to problems the hotel was having. When we turned on the AC the entire room smelled of sewage - this smell seemed to be coming from the bathroom pipes too at all times- it was very unpleasant to stay in the room for very long. We were told by staff that it was the street, but it was clearly not coming from there as when we openeed the windows to let the air in, the smell went away. Wouldnt have been a problem if it wasnt hot out -but we needed the AC. We requested twice that the bed be fixed as a leg had broken off before we got there and it was never fixed. Finally, we lost all our water pressure in our room and couldnt get the shower to stay on more than a dribble.. At this point we decided to check out. Breakfasts on the roofgarden were scenic but the food was really not good - especially compared to the other hotels we stayed in; there werent any of the special touches such as yogurt and fresh fruit salad and honeycomb & fruit syrups which are general standards at all included breakfasts in the hotels in Istanbul. I will say that these problems were most likely temporary, but you're better off staying at the neighboring hotels on the same street (such as Seven Hills Hotel) if you want to be in the best area in Sultanhamet. Location is very good though.
