Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

“Wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

Friends told me to go, it's pretty hard to get there (a short bus ride from the Galata bridge, but the traffic was horrible), but it's worth the pain. The paintings and the mosaics are beautiful, no words to describe, the church is small and intimate.

Watch out: there are restoration works in the church probably they will last for another two three years.

“Mosaics and paintings!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

Small and beautiful window into the history that's a bit far from the main city but worth the trip. We found the interior - mosaics and paintings more interesting than the ones in Aya Sofia, which is more impressive from the outside.

The audio guide was a bit hard to follow but we enjoyed nonetheless. Go for a guided tour if you are interested in learning more about the mosaics and the paintings.

1 hour is enough to see the place. Some parts are closed due to restoration.

Also, do try 400 year old ottoman recipes at Asitane restaurant next to the Church after you are done!

“Amazing place. Partially inaccessible because of restauration works.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

You need to take a taxi to reach this museum because it is too far away from everything in the city to walk. Unfortunately it is hard to reach by public transport because you need to take several busses. Taxidrivers in Istanbul are terrible. We have been ripped off when we took a taxi back to the city. The driver pulled the "changing money trick" on us and as we were off guard, it has cost us 80TLR. Be warned !
The museum itself is amazing. The mosaics and the frescos are very well preserved. We did not use an audioguid so i cannot comment on that.
Unfortunately the nave of the church was closed when we visited but I saw it on photographs and it is the least interesting part of the museum.
