“Nice hotel, but a bit far from everything.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

We stayed here for 4 days and 3 nights. We booked from the hotel's website. We picked the "business deal", which comes with internet access and breakfast. The room itself is large and nice. The bed is a little bit worn and the mattress is not firm. It sort of "curved" or "caved-in" in the middle of the mattress but somehow I can still sleep on them without having any backaches in the morning. Wifi access in the room is okay, but we got disconnected many times and need to re-connect every now and then. The breakfast is excellent. Great selection of food, with chefs ready to make eggs/omelettes and pancakes/waffles for you. The breakfast terrace provides a nice view of the Bosphorus. My only real complaint about this hotel is the location. It is quite far from everything. We didn't want to have dinner at the hotel, so we thought of just walk around and get a kebab or any food from a restaurant nearby the hotel. Well, we found out there aren't any shops/restaurant near the hotel. The nearest restaurant is 15 minutes (uphill) walk from the hotel. This would not be a problem if you like to talk long walks. But sometimes you just want to go out of the hotel for a short while to grab something quick to eat. You can't do that in this hotel. You really need to take a taxi if you want to go anywhere. Anyway, after our stay here, we moved to another hotel located in the heart of the Sultanahmet area, which is much closer to tourist attractions, shops, restaurants etc. The Swissotel is good if you want some peace and quiet, and away from the main tourist areas. But if you want easy access to attractions, shops and convenience, then you'd be better off staying in a hotel located in the Sultanahmet area.

I liked very much the hotel, especially the Turkish bath and the SPA area.
Very nice rooms and quite close to the main restaurants and discos on the Bosphorus.
I hadn't time to test the restaurant but breakfast was top level.

My wife and I, and two friends, vacationed in Istanbul for the first time from 8/23/12 to 9/2/12. We typically stay at Starwoods properties but chose the Swissotel for part of our trip for its outdoor pool which was suppose to be one of the biggest in the city (we also stayed at the W Hotel and Grand Hyatt for part of our trip – I wrote separate reviews for those hotels). Our stay at the Swissotel was nice. It is a clean hotel, but seems a bit dated with the décor. We stayed in a room on the 6th floor. Our room was spacious and the bathroom was average – nothing special. There is a tub/shower combo which is poorly designed. Water goes all over the place when you are taking a shower and the shower head is undersized so you can’t get completely under it. Basically, you get in and out quickly – no rain shower experience like at the W Hotel or at the Grand Hyatt. The hotel does have amazing views of the Bosphorous, and an impressive lobby though..
The location of the hotel was good. We live in NYC and are accustomed to walking a lot. The hotel is a 15 min walk to the Kabatas Tram that takes you to the old city (another 15-20 min). The tram is simple and not confusing to figure out. No need to take taxis unless you can’t do the walk. We preferred limiting our taxi usage as much as possible because about every other taxi we used tried to rip us off and we just got tired of dealing with it.
The outdoor pool at the hotel is nice, but not as good as the Grand Hyatt in my opinion. The Grand Hyatt pool is more low key and has more umbrellas. The few umbrellas the Swissotel has are fixed and cannot be moved. Most of the chairs surround the pool and have no shade. If you want a cabana with shade you have to pay for it. The food served at the pool was ok but very expensive in comparison to the Hyatt. The portions were also smaller. One advantage the Swissotel did have over the Hyatt was each chair had a service button you could press to get a waiter to come to you. At the Hyatt, waiters coming by to see if you needed anything weren’t as frequent as they should have been. The rooftop bar at the hotel has fantastic views, but the cocktails are ridiculously expensive.
Although I did not use the spa, my wife and our friends did and they said the facilities were fantastic – some of the best they’ve ever used. Overall I probably would choose the W Hotel or Grand Hyatt (if I wanted an outdoor pool) over the Swissotel if I go to Istanbul again.

One of the best location once can have in Istanbul for a panoramic view of the Bosphorus from room. Ease of location, few minutes away from Taksim and Metro station. Stayed there from three nights and it was an excellent experience. There is separate check in counter from executive rooms and complementary break fast, lunch and dinner are offered to executive rooms. Surprisingly price is very competitive which comparing to peer hotels in the same locality.

Stayed 3 nights early in Sep 2012. Overall a pleasant experience due to excellent location, view and food but the hotel needs serious and immediate renovation. Rooms are old and smelly. The bathroom is something out of 80s.

swissotel bosphorus is located in a very special place in Istanbul. It is not on the Bosphorus but on a hill with fantastic views of Bosphorus, old city and the bridge. The garden is very big and surprisingly gives you the feel of a resort hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms are pretty much the same but the views of the spa block is much better. They have a very g...

Arriving at the lobby of this hotel is promising, as there is a wonderful view of the Bosphorous from the grand lobby, and the staff at reception are really lovely. Unfortunately things change when you get to the rooms, which are dated, dark and need quite a bit of fixing. Our room was in the west tower, and the air-conditioning controls were broken, the sink was clogged and the light control board was not working properly. We started off with a room in the east tower, which is a little annoying as you have to take the lift to the lobby or 10th floor and cross over to the west tower to take another lift in order to access the pool, spa, rooftop bar, etc. Basically most of the facilities are in the west tower. For the rates you pay you are expecting luxury, and that is not what you get with these rooms. Breakfast is not included and although there are coffee facilities in the room you need to pay for the coffee. It is better to go to the hotel cafe just outside the lobby and have your coffee prepared for you there. The location is good, beside a park and within short walking distance to a nice area with many restaurants, cafes and shops.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in the west tower for easier access to most of the hotel's facilities, and for abo...
