“Astounding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

Must see in Istanbul. Built in 530 AD, it is an outstanding architectural marvel. It has stood testimony to some of the sweeping changes of history, few of which happened within its doors. Kinda like an architectural Forrest Gump. Visit and soak it in and read up on the stuff that had gone on here- or read up and go visit, whatever works. Istanbul/Constantinople is a mindblowing crucible of history and the Hagia Sophia is the central piece.

“Just 'good'”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013 via mobile

I enjoyed visiting the Hagia Sophia but there was not as much information as i would have liked once inside. Admittedly, this would probably have been resolved by buying a separate guide or one of the audio guides but nonetheless, we found ourselves walking around a beautiful building with little idea of its importance.

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

An architectural and equisitely decorated marvel that was built in the 400's. It's far more impressive than the Vatican. Hire a guide to explain the church/mosque's history and to point out it's features. I am neither Christian nor Muslim but was awestruck by the magnificence of this structure.

“Breathtaking, a must-visit site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

The dome is grander than it looks in pictures. Honestly, entering the main sanctuary/prayer space brought tears to my eyes. It's truly majestic, a fine example of Roman and Ottoman architecture and art.

“Under construction!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

I have been to the Hagia Sophia a couple of other times this year but was very disappointed this time! Half of the main floor is being renovated and there is no obvious notice of the work when you pay the admission. In addition, the price of admission is the same as it was when there was no renovations! I would warn you that if you are planning to go, please be aware that approximately half the main floor is not accessible and the restoration scaffolding goes from the main floor to the dome thus restricting your views of this otherwise, fabulous site.
