“GREAT PLACE TO STAY!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

Very positive experience at Pembe, The owner of the hotel Ugur is very involved in making sure his guests have the best time in Istanbul- he is very helpful and most importantly honest. His price could not be better and his hospitality is a great introduction to Turkish culture.

It's situated very nicely- I.e close to all major attractions and most important for me...it is very quiet!(no street noise!)would definitely recommend!!

Ugur - I am sure you think I forgot you. I did not ;)!

Arriving with my 20kg suitcase I got off the Metro station Cemberlitas and decided to head downhill to Pembe walking. The sunny stunning view and walking away from the busy and touristy side uphill was absolutely worth it!

It was no problem to find the place walking (tell the taxi driver to go to Kadirga Parki) and the Pink colour makes it real easy to find the place on the south side of the tiny park.
Already upon booking Ugur did instantely reply and even accomodated my special "wishes" (tessekür ederim!) - same thing at arrival: very helpful with luggage (yes: Isanbul houses do have steep steps!) and warm "hos geldin".

My room had an awesome view on Sultanahmat, the sea side of Kumkapi (with the off the beaten path fish market) and the neighbourhood with the nice old wooden houses.
Ok the basin was tiny but in my shower I could have fitted in 4 adults and I used the sink in the kitchen :)

It is a really quiet and very local neighbourhood except 2 roads with restaurats a bit towards the west of Pink/Pembe. And yes: this is an area where you definitely hear the muezzin calling! That is part of being just downhill from one of the biggest mosques on planet earth! I did not mind it at all - it is part of the Istanbul experience!

Walking downhill south from tourist area all the way to Kumkapi fish market and even west to Yenikapi harbour (south of Aksaray) I always felt safe and secure. There was a comment about the area from another traveller - but if your appearance is decent this should not be an issue - I got back home alone in the middle of the night without any problems ever!

Breakfast: you can fix it in your room (fridge, kettle, microwave & dishes ar provided) or o what I did: go to the park: on the left/west end there is a cafè!

Ask Ugur for anything: best Haman, transfer to airport or whatever comes to your mind.
He will help you and find a solution!

Room Tip: Economy room is kind of in the basement with a window facing street level and the bathroom outside o...

We stayed on the way from London to Vietnam, taking the opportunity of the stopover to spend two days and one night in Istanbul. This hotel is at the budget end of the spectrum. It is small, and you will need to be able to carry your luggage up a narrow staircase. But it is serviceable, on the right side of Istanbul for the airport, and within comfortable walking distance of some of the main attractions (e.g. Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar). The owner, Mr Ugur, is helpful in terms of planning an itinerary and getting about.

As a person extremely bothered by bugs and dirtiness in hotels, I couldn't be happier by the cleanliness of Pembe Apart. We stayed on the 1st floor, and were seriously impressed by how spotless the place was, both inside and outside the room. You're greeted by a nice, clean smell when opening the front door, which together with the great atmosphere and security we felt in the area, helped make us feel right at home.
The owner Ugur was very friendly and always ready to help, and the location is very close to a lot of the must-see places e.g. the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, Grand Bazaar etc. Sultanahmet in general is the best place to stay in my opinion.
You have enough utilities in the room to cook yourself a good breakfast, and there are several corner shops nearby to buy essentials. There is also a laundrette next door if you're planning to stay long.

The only downsides I'd say are that although the location is good, you do need to walk up some hilly roads to get up to the main street which can be tiring, and the toilet was quite small. You could always get a taxi to solve the first problem though, but don't pay more than 10 lira (preferably 6 lira) as the distance is very short.

Tips:
1) When trying to get back to the hotel, ask directions for/tell the taxi drivers to take you back to 'Kadirga Park' which is next to the hotel, as it is more known.

2) Always try and utilise the great (and cheap!) tram and boat services, as taxi fares can easily become extortionate.

Convenient location in the centre, close by to most sights. A nice bakery around the corner where we had a cappucino and a cake in the morning. That's the only positive thing I can say about Pink Apart house.
We stayed there in early May. When we arrived the owner informed us that we will stay in one room for two nights and we will need to move to another room in the building next door. We complained about this and he said that we didn't need to move if we didn't want to. We got used to the room (it was recently refursbished and clean, although a bit dark and wet) so on day three we said to the owner that we decided not to move because we didn't want to waste an hour packing and unpacking. He said we had to and since he took cash from us on the first day there was no point arguing with him. So we moved to the room in the next building on the top floor. The furnishing was old and there was a really tiny bathroom with an extremely small washbasin and no cupboard or shelves to put our toothbrush and other stuff. So we had to keep all toiletries in the kitchenette. Since it was in the top floor, there were no proper brick walls, just wooden ones, so the room was a bit noisy in the morning and it got hot in there later in the afternoon (luckily the aircon worked). Towels were not changed.
On our last day we were allowed to leave our luggage in the house and pick it up in the afternoon. When leaving the owner didn't even get out of his office to say good bye.
All in all, I wish we had payed a few more euros extra and stayed in a normal hotel with regular service and a breakfast and didn't have to go through the hussle...

Room Tip: definitely not the top floor with alleged "see view"

While there's much in this hotel's favour - friendly owner, good price, a 10-15 minute walk to the main attractions - we had some reservations:

- Location: As two young women on holiday in Istanbul, we received street harassment wherever we went. However, as the hotel is located down side streets away from the main tourist thoroughfares, we felt particularly uncomfortable in its neighbourhood - the attention we received was undiluted by crowds of other tourists. We therefore didn't stay out much later than 9pm. (NB From what we observed, men or women travelling with men wouldn't find the location an issue.)
- Ants in the kitchenette.
- The toilet paper was never replenished - we ended up buying it ourselves.
- Hand towel and bath mat not replaced.
- The rooms could do with 'Do Not Disturb' signs. Frequent knocks from room service meant that on some mornings we felt we were being hurried from the room.
- On our last day, when we were waiting for the taxi to take us to the airport, the cleaner shooed us and our suitcases outside to wait on the street.

The Pink Apart House is located close to the old part of Istanbul (Sultanahmet) next to a very well kept park. It is a 10 minute walk (uphill) to the hippodrome and to the next tram station.
To get to the more lively part of Istanbul Beyoglu where most of the nightlive will take place will take you a total time of 1h.
The rooms were nice and clean albeit basic. The owner was very friendly and caring.
I personally liked the place because of its nice neighbourhood off from the typical tourist buzz. In particular, I like the little cafe at one corner of the park and the little kebab stores around.
