“A Great Little Hide-away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

On our first trip to Istanbul we stayed at Portus and were really pleasantly surprised by the place. Approaching the location at night was a bit difficult as it's tucked away on a side-street in a non-touristy area, but like other great little finds I've experienced, the interior was in great contrast to the exterior. Once we climbed the steep stairs to the lobby we were surprised at how orderly, clean and nicely decorated the place was. The rooms are really comfortable and well taken care of and the breakfast was served in a spotless kitchen with free wireless and all the mod cons. We especially enjoyed the location as it's just a short walk to the ferries, seafood eateries and Gallata bridge and the trams. The price is right too! Nice little find!!

Very good location, in between Sultanahmet and Taksim, very helpful and friendly staff, a delicious and extensive breakfast, cosy room with a GREAT matress and very reasonable prices! And they accepted us with our baby of 6 months...

Certainly to be recommended!

Portus House provided such a great stay for us! The location of the hostel is superb and allowed us to get an idea of more local happenings in Istanbul. And on top of that, the travel distance to the touristy sites was so easy as the tram station is within short walking distance. There's a lot of restaurants nearby as the hostel is located near the Galata Bridge and if you want to chill in the evening, it is definitely the place to be.

The rooms were beautifully designed and everything was so clean! The staffs at Portus House was really friendly and they offered us help and we had a nice chat! :) The breakfast was really nice and every morning, we were greeted by the kind staffs there!

There's a supermarket just opposite the hostel, so getting things was easy and within short walking distances, there are a lot of food places.

I loved the hostel and would definitely be back in the future again! :) Go Portus House! :)

Thank you so much ! The hotel is really conviently located between old and new city, which provide customers with easy access to all major points of interest whether for sightseeing, shopping or entertaining. It is also a few steps away from one of the most famous Turksish delights café! rooms and water facilities are always clean . a special mention for the really friendly staff who sent me back by post all clothes I had forgotten in the room all the way to France! THANKS for the great moments!

This hostel was superb, with great attention to detail. It may be a little pricier than other hostels, but it is more hotel than hostel (and better than most hotels!). I will definitely stay here when I am next in Istanbul. It is close to public transport, 10 mins walk to the Dolmabahçe Palace, and 20 mins walk over the bridge to Sultanahmet.

Located just across Galata Bridge it is an outstanding place for everyone wanting to escape from the over-priced and tourist-oriented Sultanahmet. Portus House can be reached very conveniently by tram, as well as by bus or ferry. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is a supermarket just across the street, so you can keep your budget tight easily. We reserved a room for two, but instead got a three-bedded one, which was great, since we had more than enough place to keep our stuff on. However, the walls certainly need re-painting (blood spots from squeezed mosquitoes are not among the most pleasant of views) and the breakfasts could have been more ample (note that this is my opinion, as my better half kept saying that they were OK). Overall — highly recommended!

Portus House was a great find for us first-time-to-Istanbul travelers. We were there a total of 7 days, and Cigdem and her staff Ahmet and Ismail were wonderful...always willing to answer any question and provide help, advice and insights. Because we were not interested in being in Old Town Istanbul amidst high tourist traffic, this Karakoy location was perfect for us; the port, ferries, Taksim, the Old Town and beyond were within walking distance or mere metro stops away. Portus House is in a quiet, developing section, an area that looks on track to be its own destination. (Karakoy has coffee and tea places, some little shops, markets and restaurants. Buildings are being renovated and port and shipping-related concerns are located there.) PH rooms were comfortable, shared baths/WC completely fine, and the housekeeping great. We appreciated the special breakfast treatment that everyone got in the mornings...thank you! With any luck, we will go back; we will certainly recommend PH to anyone interested in Istanbul. Because of a dearth of signs on smaller Istanbul streets, getting a good fix on the hotel's location in advance is advised...once you're there, it's easy to find.
