“Great Little Hotel with Great Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

My wife and I just checked out on 20 May 2013. The staff at this hotel were exceptionally caring and helpful. Our room was very nice, though a bit small. We were told the building was converted to a hotel just two years ago, which accounts for its new, modern interior.

Though the tiny street it is on was not attractive, the next street up was and had loads of outdoor restaurants which we enjoyed very much. Being just outside the walls of Topkapi Palace, it was an outstanding location for visiting the major Istanbul attractions in the area of Sultanhamet Square.

There is no elevator, but the staff cheerfully took our bags to and from the room. There is a rooftop terrace, though the view is compromised by old buildings.

We could have found cheaper hotels but chose the Esans based on other Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed.

Room Tip: We had requested a sea view. We got one, but it was a limited one over unattractive, old buildings...

We just returned from a four day trip to Istanbul. From the first email contact it was clear that Esans Hotel would offer a warm, personalized welcome and a pleasant atmosphere. The transfer service was smooth.Reception was friendly and offers of help and advice were genuine. The rooms are carefully furnished with attractive, coordinated, rich fabrics. The bathrooms and shower were new and nicely tiled. The location can't be beat for a first time visitor. It's not right on the main road so it isn't loud, but it's close enough that you feel perfectly secure returning on foot at 11pm. The location is literally a stone's throw from Topkapi's wall and a few minutes walk from a main entrance. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, the Hippodrome, the Basilica Cistern, the tram and the restaurants and shops of Sultanamet are all reachable within ten minutes. The delight these young hoteliers take in engaging guests was remarkable. They knock themselves out. The breakfast buffet offered a wide range of choice esp. considering it's a small hotel. The coffee was excellent and the freshly pressed OJ at no additional cost was a nice touch.
It wasn't easy to get a hotel reservation in mid-May and we're very grateful that Esans was able to take our reservation and find us a nearby accommodation for the one night they were already booked. it's true that you have to be able to take the stairs, but in general Istanbul requires a lot of walking and is not a good destination for those with bad knees or trouble walking.

Room Tip: ask for a low floor if you can't handle stairs but you'll sacrifice windows

We stayed 9 nights in the Esans hotel in May. It was so close to everything, quiet at night, clean and the breakfast selections were many with always something a little special each morning. The gentlemen who watched the desk were very friendly and always willing to help. I would certainly stay again and recommend it to others.

Stayed at Esans Hotel for 3 nights in May 2013. Great location close & walk-able to all the main attractions in Sultanahmet.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone I know that is planning on visiting Istanbul.

This hotel is very conveniently sited, being only a few minutes’ walk to the Topkapi Palace entrance, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, etc. It is in a quiet side street with very little traffic.

Our happy experience started with the ‘how to find us instructions’ which were easy to follow and a considerable improvement on some of the directions information given by hotels.

We had just reached the entrance when we were asked ‘Can I help you?’ It was a member of staff coming back to the building, who promptly carried our luggage into the hotel.

Once inside we were warmly greeted and invited to sit while our passports were copied. This was carried out a great deal faster and more efficiently than is so often the case and, while we waited we were offered tea or coffee and given some nuts and pieces of Turkish Delight.

Our receptionist explained that the hotel had been once owned by a fragrances merchant (thus ‘Essences’) and so each of the rooms was named after a different perfume. He then provided a most helpful briefing on the hotel’s facilities and so on. We also received a free map of Istanbul that proved a useful adjunct to our other ones.

His colleague who took our bags to our room showed us how to use the mini-safe, the air conditioning, phone, minibar (very reasonably priced compared with the usual hotel tariff), etc. and we immediately felt ‘at home from home’. The room was a fair size (by European standards I should stress), clean and attractive. There were nice big mirrors, rugs on the wooden floor, an efficient shower and a charmingly folded table cloth and coverlet on the bed (which was roomy and very comfortable).

Breakfasts in the appealing room downstairs were ample buffet fashion (with a few hot items such as hard boiled eggs or scrambled eggs and other foods in the heated containers) with various types of salad items, sliced meats, fruits, cereals and the like. It was also nice to get freshly squeezed orange juice and unlimited coffee. There is also a roof terrace with views of the sea at the front and the historic city – dominated by the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia behind.

There is free Wi-Fi in all rooms. However, I didn’t want to bring my computer on this trip, so was pleased that a laptop is available for the use of guests. The keyboard layout was a bit different to what we were used to, but a staff member gave us the necessary guidance and printed out our return flight boarding passes for us.

His friendly helpfulness was characteristic of our stay at the Esans. I have stayed in numerous hotels across many countries, but the standard of service was the best I have ever experienced. Without exception, the staff were consistently genuinely eager to please. We were given a card with the hotel’s phone number and told to call if we had any difficulties when going round Istanbul – and I am confident that they really would have gone to great lengths if we had needed to take them up on their offer.

I once said that the staff in a restaurant deserved six stars if that rating was available: for this hotel I’d say they merited seven for their friendliness and helpful attitudes!

We intend to stay here on our next visit to Istanbul and commend wholeheartedly the excellent Hotel Esans.

Well, what a treat. We stayed 4 nights at Esans in Istanbul and what a beautiful small typically Turkish hotel it was. The location was superb, in a quiet street nestled between the blue Mosque and the river, close to the train and close to great restaurants and all of the sights.

The highlight of this stay were the staff who were superb. I have stayed in accommodation all around the world, however the staff at this hotel cannot be matched. Engin and Ayculd ( may have is spelled this) were wonderful. They gave us lots of information and we had lots of informal chats.

We stayed in a lovel room and there was a roof top with fantastic views of the blue mosque and the river, unfortunately the weather was too cold for breakfast on the roof.

I would highly recommend this hotel and will stay again if I return to Istanbul. Some people have complained about the stairs, however everywhere we stayed in europe, other than the large chain hotels had stairs, and this is insignificant when you staye in accommodation which is typical to the country. My freind and I have severe arthritis in feet etc, however we managed, rather than stay in large chain hotel.

Wonderful stay, thankyou staff.

Room Tip: Would have booked a room with sea view but none available. However cannot complain about our room.
