“Excellent location, excellent service, excellent breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

I stayed at Hotel Sultania for five nights on a motorbike tour around South-East Europe. This was definitely the best hotel I stayed at during my tour, but, admittedly, it was also the most expensive one.

The hotel has a very nice location in the Sultanahmet district, with easy access by foot or tram to many places of interest, and surrounded by lots of restaurants. The hotel's own roof-top restaurant, Olive, was rather good, and it provides excellent panoramic views over the city.

The room rate included a rich breakfast buffet that offered a wide variety of dishes, and the selection was different each day. This must have been one of the best hotel breakfasts I have ever had.

A fitness room and a swimming pool were at guests' disposal free of charge. Sauna, hammam, and massage were available for extra fee. The sauna was all right, but, in my opinion, the water in the swimming pool was much too warm for a refreshing effect.

The hotel has a small garage, but I was told there was not any room for my motorbike. I was advised to leave my motorbike on the pavement where it was visible from the reception. It looked rather a safe location.

The hotel staff was outstanding. Especially the people at the front desk were extremely professional and courteous, made me feel welcome and accommodated my every request. Whenever I entered the lobby, they greeted me politely and, unless busy with other guests, they entered into a friendly little chat about good food, motorbikes or my continuous adventures.

I can recommend this hotel without reservations. I would stay here if I travelled again to Istanbul.

We stayed at hotel sultania for 2 nights and it was a very comfortable stay. The rooms were nice and clean. The bathroom was a good size. There were a lot of varieties of food at breakfast, but we didn't really find anything we liked too much on the first day. However, on the second day, we decided to try more things and eventually found things we liked.

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon, which we started at the Hotel Sultania in Istanbul. From our pick-up at the airport to our departure 5 days later, the staff of the hotel went above and beyond to make our time special. Check-in to our room was quick and easy, the concierge gave excellent recommendations for food and excursions, and the rooftop restaurant offers fantastic views. The hotel is ideally situated, a short walk from the Sultanhamet district (where the Hagia Sophia and blue Mosque are located), the new district (shopping), the waterfront, and other local sites. Outside of our transport to and from the airport, we were able to walk to each and every site we visited, saving money on transportation and getting to see some diverse neighborhoods of Istanbul.
The only complaint we'd offer is that the beds weren't the most comfortable, but as we traveled to more areas in the region, this seemed to be the norm and might just represent a shift from what we were accustomed to in America. The hotel did offer a "pillow menu" with various options that could have made a difference, but we were so tired from all that we did that we still slept well. Other than that, the hotel met and exceeded ALL expectations and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: Our room had a balcony, which we ended up not using much, but I think it was the same price as a reg...

Room decor fantastic. Tea, coffee and water provided. Good quality soaps, gels etc. Proper coat hangers! Excellent variety at breakfast buffet including the ability to freshly squeeze orange juice. Staff dedicated and SO helpful. We are recommending this hotel wherever we can and will definitely stay again if we find ourselves in Istanbul. It is so convenient to walk to the main sightseeing attractions. One thing to note, complimentary transfers to/from airport only apply if you book through their own website.

Convenient location walking distance to old city attractions. The room was awesome with luxury touches like bathrobes, designer toiletries, local sweets, etc. Each room has a thmese based on one of the wives of a sultan. The breakfast was good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely a place to return to if I visit Istanbul again.

Excellent hotel. We booked a double room and they upgraded us to the family suite which was huge! Turkish delights on arrival and the rooms even have a pillow menu with 5 different types to choose from (as you do).

All the usual amentities and lovely accomodating professional staff.

The breakfast was amazing. Freshly squeezed orange juice, pancakes and honeycomb. Definitely a great way to start the day in the buzzing city of Istanbul.

Only downside: WiFi went out while we were there as they were apparently servicing it (haven't heard that one before). They did offer the restaurant's WiFi details next door but the signal was so weak it wasn't worth it.

Really easy to get to. We just took the metro and tram from the Ataturk airport and got off at the Gülhane tram stop. The hotel is only a few minutes walk away (3.5TL one way).

Room Tip: Ask for a room not above the ground floor restaurant - it's noisey in the morning

Everybody at the Hotel Sultania made our first trip to Istanbul extremely comfortable - from arranging for a private guide the first day, to recommending fantastic restaurants, and just being available for a chat about the town. This is a small boutique hotel - the fourth family run hotel in this district. It has a restaurant - The Olive, with views of the Bosphorus and Hagia Sophia on the property which I'd recommend if you do not feel like venturing out one night. Breakfast is included with fruit salads, fresh honey and thick Turkish yogurt, eggs with mushrooms, tomatoes cooked as well as fresh with cheese, breakfast meats, cereals, fresh OJ etc.

Many restaurants are within a short cab ride or walk. The metro runs nearby, so if you want to use this system, it is easy to reach the Dolmabache Palace or Museum of Modern Art. Locally the Sultanahmet district has nearly everything you'd want to see on a first trip - The Topaki Palace and Archeology Museum, the Hagia Sophia and the Sultanahment Mosque (The Blue Mosque), The Basilica Cistern, The Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, the Egyptian Spice Market and the Grand Bazaar. Istanbul is hilly and has lots of cobblestones, so if walking is an issue for you, take a cab. Cabs are reasonably priced and can be arranged by the hotel. Be sure to see Istikal Street, a pedestrian thoroughfare starting at Taksim Square. Also the Cultural Center is about three blocks walk from the hotel which hosts a highly rated dance performance as well as performances of the Whirling Dervishes.

We had a beautiful room with a balcony on the fifth floor which had a large marble bathroom. It had a queen and single bed, and was great for a small family. Some of the rooms have very small bathrooms with little privacy, so if that is an issue for you, get a room with a hamas (larger bathroom).

The restaurant recommendations from Ozlem and the staff that we had were really good -- Topaz and The Ottoman Palace were restaurants that we visited for lunch. Topaz is uphill from the Dolmabache Palace with a wide open terrace overlooking the palace and the Bosphorus. Ottoman Palace is near the Hagia Sophia and is also worth a visit. Asitane Restaurant is contiguous to the Chora Church and has a walled patio covered with vines and good Ottoman cuisine. Quiet live music at night. I think that the church closes at 6:30 pm, so you could arrange an early dinner afterwards or lunch before a visit.
The Hotel Sultania felt like home for our week's stay.
