Just stayed at Ares hotel with my two daughters, aged 21 and 23, for a five day holiday in Istanbul.
It's a small hotel in the heart of the historic - and tourist - area. Great location for sightseers: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Architectural Museum, Roman underground water system all within 500 metres. Two minutes walk from hotel to the tram system linking to wider city and to metro.
The hotel is cheap and cheerful. There are not elegant tapestries or designer furniture, but if there were, you'd have to pay a lot more. Rooms were clean , beds comfortable, all plumbing worked etc. Breakfast plentiful, omelettes excellent, and ea/coffee/cold water/Coke etc available all day for free.
Being a small hotel, you quickly get to know the staff; several have worked there for years, so it runs smoothly. They are very friendly – and never pushy.
Ares is on a narrow side street, so not much traffic. Less noisy than most nearby hotels but still many passers by. We did not find it noisy but perhaps it can be on the first floor at the front. Restaurants close late and people wander the streets 'til the early hours.
We ate only breakfast there; it was simple but plentiful; teas/coffee/soft drinks available through the day at no cost - a good perk for when you want to sit to think out your next short trip, or return at the end of a hot day's sightseeing.
They have a roof top (as we as ground floor) restaurant for lunch and supper; it was hot during our stay, but too windy for rooftop dining, so can't comment on the food, but the view from the roof is good - of towers of ancient mosques and the general bustle of the old city.
