I had a 20 hour layover in Istanbul this week. Arrived at noon and had a 7.50am flight to London Gatwick the following morning.
First of all, I did not find the hotel expensive as others have mentioned. I paid 67GBP on Easyclick.com. It felt like a typical airport hotel... I got a room on the 16th floor facing the airport. I had my internet cable with me as I knew there was no free wi fi in the rooms. It was a spacious twin room with a flat screen TV and big windows looking out towards the airport. A glass table with 2 chairs where the internet connection was located.
No CNN but you get BBC world and Euronews. My luggage had been checked through to Gatwick so I just had a small travel bag for the day. This meant it was convenient to take the metro for one stop and then make the 5 minute walk to the hotel. After checking-in, I made my way into the city by means of metro and tram. The tram was crowded and I'm glad I did not have to negotiate a suitcase. The journey takes about 45 mins to Sultan Ahmet.
I was able to enjoy the city for about 8 hours and then made my way back to the hotel to get some sleep.
I must admit that I was a bit anxious about taking the first shuttle bus at 6.30am. But all went well and despite having to clear security twice and wait in a long queue for passport control I arrived at the gate in good time for a 7.50am flight. I did have my boarding card and this did save a lot of time. It would have been tighter timewise if I had had to queue to check-in, though.
All in all, it was a very good decision to use this hotel as a place to sleep. I had dinner in the city and had no need to use the mini-bar or room service which is extortionate. Just make sure you have a bottle of water with you.
The cons were that the carpets had seen better days. There was no kettle or coffee maker which I would have used.
However, breakfast was included and they begin serving at 5.30am so you have time to grab a coffee and a bite to eat before the first shuttle bus to the airport. If you need to be at the airport earlier then you'll have to take a taxi.I'd stay there again and recommend it to anyone in a similar situation to mine. No longer than one night though!
Make sure you take an internet cable for your laptop. Ask for a high floor facing airport. Corner ro...
