The TomTom suites hotel is a wonderful place to stay, situated in the Beyoglu area of the city which is a fascinating, lively neighbourhood with interesting shops and restaurants and great for people watching.
On arrival we were greeted warmly and given an in depth rundown of the must-see places, the transport system and restaurant suggestions. The room was amazing - spacious, top quality furnishings and bed linen and the marble bathroom, with underfloor heating, was luxurious. After travelling all day we asked the reception staff to recommend somewhere nearby where we could get a light meal and their recommendation was spot on and we had a great selection of meze. On another evening the recommendation was Zubeyir Ockabasi, which has a charcoal grill in the middle of the room, and again the food was wonderful.
We slept well, untroubled by noise from inside or outside the hotel. The breakfast was good although the choice was more limited than we've had in larger hotels which is understandable in a hotel with so few rooms. The views from the restaurant are superb.
It is only a short walk, downhill, to the tram stop and it is possible to buy a travel card from reception. These can be used on trams, ferries etc. and can be topped up at some tram stops but the initial deposit cannot be refunded if there is still money on the card - so think ahead. You can also buy a museum pass which cuts down on queueing but we were unsure how many we would visit so we paid invidivually and, in November, the queues were short.
There is so much to see in Istanbul. We tried to visit all the most famous places and cruise the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn and this took up our three full days there and left us planning to return to explore the rest of the city by just wandering where the fancy takes us, not to mention eating at more of the wonderful restaurants throughout the city.
To summarise, this is a small, extremely comfortable hotel of a high standard where guests are looked after very well by the ever helpful staff. It was a pleasure to stay there and we will certainly choose this hotel once again when we return.
