“Excellent hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

This brilliant hostel is perfect for a break in Istanbul. It has friendly and helpful staff. An excellent bar area where we met lots of people. The breakfast is ok, could do with some fruit.
Free Internet (although only 3 computers). Would definitely recommend!

When planning my short vacation to Istanbul I was pleasantly surprised to read all the positive reviews about the Sultan Hostel. They even were rewarded with a certificate of excellence this year. I think it would be fair to give you all a short first hand summary of positive and surely some negative features of this Hostel:

+

-Excellent location! (only a couple of steps away from Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosk etc)
-Staff are good and love to help you out where they can.
-Indeed the Hostel is clean and that is not always so when staying in hostels.
-Good place to meet other travellers and watch football, rugby etc.

-

* As other reviewers also noted I experienced the rooms (I booked a single/ double private room with shared bathroom for 40 Euro per night) to be small and for instance even lacking a reading light and a hook to hang your wet towel on.

* I would strongly recommend any manager involved with the hostel to seriously consider replacing the mattresses because I seriously suspect the one I slept on for a week to have caused me a couple of bruises. The springs almost came through and I just cant believe changing them would cost much.

* Street can be noisy and also in the morning you will not be able to sleep in. This is just a comment, It did not bother me as I expected this and wanted to start exploring Istanbul early anyway.
* Some people wrote about breakfast being super and plentiful. OK there is plenty but it consists of:
Nescafe, two cereals, Turkish cheese, one jam, and butter with bread. Every day.

I support other reviewers in their comments that it is not a problem sharing shower/ bathroom with a whole floor. I was always able to take a shower and they are great!!

Overall I do not think this hostel lives up to the expectations you get from their website or TA. It is a good but basic option in a city with a lot of alternatives.

Advise: Do take the airport charter they offer and also take it back as yellow cabs will surely rip you off.

Room Tip: Ones above the bar are noisy but also the ones on the other street are noisy due to a bakery working...

I have stayed at the Sultan Hostel three times and every time it just gets better. They have recently refurbished the hostel including fitting air conditioning to the rooms, having it painted and so on. It even better than when I last visited in February this year. I went again on the 29 Sept this year and I just loved it even more. The food, location, price and atmosphere are the best, not forgetting how helpful the staff were. There is a girl who works in the bar, called Gabriela who is contagious with her smile, friendship and she and all the staff makes you feel at home. I will certainly return to Istanbul and without a shadow of doubt I will stay at the Sultan Hostel because I just felt at home. Much appreciated the way they treated me.

Room Tip: The back of the hotel, first floor are the best if you want a really quiet night however, if you wan...

Rooms extremely basic. Nowhere to hang clothes. I was told on arrival I had the best double with ensuite. The ensuite is a wetroom. Nice hot water though. A bedside light would be nice rather than just harsh ceiling light late at night. Air con was a must as far too noisy from outside bars and restaurants to have windows open during night. A bakery works all night opposite hostel which can also be noisy.

Hostel staff appear quite unfriendly unless sitting at the booking in desk. Once you start to speak to them they are mostly friendly. One man on the staff is very rude. One female member of staff Abigail was very nice.

Not a place to stay if you find getting back to sleep difficult when noisy young people slam their doors when returning from nights out or arriving late. They have no respect for others already asleep.

The hostel seem to convert lira to euros rather than UK pound so room is expensive for what you got.

Many Istanbul hotels and hostels have roof terrace space, sadly the sultan has a shoe box size space currently not in use. One website stated a swimming pool, this is not correct.

Use hostel airport transfer service. Very good and reasonable, do not get in a yellow taxis outside airport on arrival, they rip off the unknowing new arrival big time!

I stayed here for two nights in early September -- as part of a group of four -- in a six-person dorm and was impressed by the cleanliness of the rooms and shared bath facilities.

Although some previous commenters have said it's a pain that there's only one shower per floor, it's not really a problem as you can just use the facilities on a different floor. The hostel was quite full and we didn't wait long at all to take a shower.

Breakfast is simple, but fresh and plentiful with decent hours.

The bar beneath the hostel is quite popular so some noise is to be expected in rooms, but I found the noise to be dull and did not prevent sleeping. Also, all rooms have a/c so the noise can be dulled even further by keeping the window(s) shut.

One disappointment was that the hostel's web site still advertises a roof terrace, but, like many other hostels in the area, this roof terrace has been turned into a giant dormitory. Don't come expecting sea views from the roof.

Staff was competent and helpful, but not particularly friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the back of the hostel -- and on a higher floor -- if you are a light sleeper.

I stayed there in 2009 and returned this year (2012). I can just agree with the positive comments written about Sultan: the cleanliness, the location the amenities, etc. Breakfast and towels included. Great place to meet other travellers but most of all, the staff is helpful, friendly and will go out of their way to make your stay pleasant and make you feel at home. Gabriella lights up the room with her smile and laugh! Nice terrace and music until quite late, so if you are looking for a quiet place and are a light sleeper, it might not be the best for you.

Basic rooms - we stayed in a double private room with shared bathroom. Room was clean, a little small with just a bed. Shared bathrooms were clean and no problems with availability. We stayed on the 4th floor and unfortunately there's no lift.

Breakfast is supplied each morning and the restaurant is quite nice to grab a bite. Staff extremely friendly and the restaurant/lounge area is very cool to sit and relax with large screen TVs showing live sports games. Free wifi too.

Location is great - lots of restaurants, mini supermarkets etc. It's a 5-10min walk to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. From there you can catch trams to other tourist attractions.

Would stay again.
