“Lovely stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Never been to Istanbul and this hotel had been well-reviewed. Took a chance on it and it paid off. The hotel was small but very attractive, breakfast was delicious, and the location was perfect. It was near many of the tourist attractions and yet it had a very local and family-oriented feel. The staff were super friendly and helpful. After a long day of sightseeing, it was lovely to enjoy a coffee on the rooftop terrace overlooking the sea. Highly recommended.

Although we originally tried to book Lonely Planet's "Top Choice", The Marmara, it wasn't available for the dates we needed but we were referred instead to The Saruhan, owned by the same family.
What a gem! The staff were all so friendly and helpful and it has a lovely downstairs reception area with tea and coffee available as well as a rooftop terrace with a view where we ate breakfast in the morning and unwound at the end of each day. The breakfast is delicious and fresh.
The Saruhan is in a real neighborhood, safe amonsgt the friendly locals, and is walking distance to most of the major sights in Istanbul (don't miss the Kucuk AyaSofya (little Aya Sofya) just around the corner...it's beautiful). We had a sea-view triple room that was very clean and comfortable with it's own balcony. It was a bit noisy, but so is the rest of Istanbul. This hotel is very good value for the money and we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor in the front of the building and it was a bit noisy with the trains and a...

As other reviews have pointed out, the Saruhan is located a little ways outside of the main tourist areas in Sultanahmet. Although it isn't glitzy or glamorous, I found the location to be wonderful. It's within easy walking distance to the main attractions (10 minutes tops), yet away from the overpriced tourist traps. It definitely gave me a feel for what the "real" Istanbul is like. We had a sea view room, which did face the soccer field and could be noisy. But since there's AC, it's an easy solution to just close the window at night :) The breakfast terrace is wonderful and the staff friendly and helpful.

Pros: free coffee/tea machine, wifi, a/c, very friendly and helpful staff, breakfast on the terrace, location

Cons: a very minor one. not able to flush toilet paper, but that's an old city plumbing issue, not the hotels. also, i had to go to the lobby to get a wifi signal

Room Tip: Sea view rooms face a soccer field and games can go on until late. I slept perfectly well by closin...

I had enquired about the Marmara Guesthouse, but it was full, so we were referred to Saruhan. I am so pleased we stayed here! The location is excellent for exploring the Sultanahmet, but you can get away from the craziness of coaches, trams and crowds by staying at Saruhan. The hotel is small and hospitality is great. Best features are breakfast on roof terrace (also good to watch sunset), free tea/coffee machine, free access to internet. Rooms at the front are exposed to noise from football pitches, and occasional train, but I liked this buzz of local life and you can block it out by closing doors and putting on air conditioning. Staff are courteous and helpful. Price is very good considering location and standard.

Room Tip: I was advised to not go for ground floor or garden rooms - they would be quiet at night, but there i...

I'm very happy we stayed in Saruhan Hotel and would definitely do so again. It's only around a ten minute walk from the major sights of Sultanahmet, but the surrounding area maintains quite a 'local' feel. All the staff speak excellent English and are extremely helpful, and there's a great view of both the city and the Sea of Marmara from the terrace. My only (incredibly minor) criticism is that the curtains in both rooms were too small for the windows, so the rooms were rather light during the night.

Room Tip: We stayed there on two separate occasions and had both a front and back room. The latter are definit...

I stayed at the Saruhan Hotel in Istanbul last week. I had tried to book the Mamara Guesthouse, which was full, but the same people have opened a second hotel, the Saruhan. I thought it was great. My room was at the back but large, light and airy, comfortable queen size bed with duvet, very clean, and a real bathroom! Breakfast was on the terrace on the 4th floor, with sea views. It is very close to LIttle Aya Sofia. The staff were very very good, the desk is manned 24 hours, there was complimentary tea and coffee downstairs, and a computer was available. The breakfasts were excellent, and the hotel staff always available to help with directions, maps, etc etc. A very good family run hotel.

I was very pleased with the choice.

My family and I were fortunate enough to spend a week in the bustling, beautiful city of Istanbul and furthermore were lucky to have stayed at Saruhan hotel. We had a family room with a city view. Incredibly comfortable and extremely reasonably priced. The staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful and most welcoming. We were served a delicious Turkish breakfast on the roof terrace every morning and in the evenings enjoyed sundowners on the terrace whilst watching the ships sail on the Marmara. The location of the hotel in the old part of the city is wonderful for exploring the sights on that side and convenient enough to get to the other side of the Galata bridge. Be sure to try out the local restaurant Ziya Baba, for authentic, delicious and very well priced Turkish food just a stones throw from the hotel. All in all the ease and comfort of staying at Saruhan hotel certainly contributed to making Istanbul one of the most wonderful, exciting cities I have ever visited.
