“7 current photos. Brunch at Mangerie is a must for 'insiders' in Istanbul.”
The easiest way to get to Mangerie is to ask the cab driver to take you to the Starbucks in Bebek. From there, Mangerie is about 2-3 blocks North of Starbucks on the opposite side(from Starbucks) of Cevdet Pasa Cad street. While the corridor leading up to Mangerie is difficult to find, ask any young person on the street and they will point you in the right direction. From street level, walk up 3 floors and you will see the Mangerie sign posted(see picture). Given how popular this place has become, expect to queue to get a seat in the restaurant.
Bebek is a chic little neighborhood where young and beautiful Turks and expats hang out and have fun. Having the Bosphorus University nearby gives the area a distinctly collegiate feel similar to Princeton or Cambridge. The mix of trendy shops and the cool river breeze throughout the day makes this place really special in Istanbul.
The clientele of Mangerie is a microcosm of Bebek. Upwardly mobile locals, students with cash and expats getting their regular fix of sausages, eggs, and waffles.
Mangerie offers a complete Western Brunch from pancakes to omelets, cupcakes to salads. The restaurant is small and hosts at the most 15 tables which makes for an intimate setting. They show real pride in their food and the service is fast and efficient. I have included a couple of pictures of their open kitchen and bar in this review. During brunch on Sunday our party also decided to have Bloody Marys with breakfast and a couple also had Sangrias. You can imagine the speed and flow of the conversation after.
Besides the good food, Mangerie also offers a stunning view of the Bosphorus from its terrace which holds about 4-5 tables. Expect a longer queue if you want a table on the terrace.
Instead of talking about going to Golden Horn or the Grand Bazaar - there is much more brag value if you tell your Turkish friends that you had brunch at Mangerie in Bebek. My Turkish friends were impressed when I told them that I had brunch there - and many had their own stories to tell and also a favorite dish on the menu. Expect to hear many times that Mangerie's Sangrias are "to die for."
