“Excellent Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

I went to Istanbul for the 1st time with a friend of mine, and we stayed at Gunen Hotel - Laleli.
It was just wonderful...
Our room was perfect and clean, the rates were very reasonable, the staff were personable and helpful, the breakfast buffet was very delicious and healthy, the location was perfect for site-seeing and for shopping.
It was great. We couldn't have found a better place.
I will stay at Gunen Hotel everytime I'm in the city, and I would recomend it to everyone.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights last week. On arrival we were encouraged that the hotel was clean, well situated and that the furniture in the room was nice and new. Although small the room was perfectly adequate for our needs and appropriate for the price. The rooftop terrace and pool were also a bonus.

HOWEVER: We got no sleep at all in this hotel. We had seen an earlier review here on Trip Advisor where the reviewer mentioned issues with the management refusing to turn on the air conditioning, and hoped this was a one-off. It wasn't. The air conditioning is centrally-controlled and was not switched on the whole time we were there. The first night in particular was unbearably hot - the temperature outside was 30 degrees Celsius (we saw the temperature displayed on a number of signs around the city so this was definitely the case) and in the small room the heat was incredible. We repeatedly called reception who had trouble speaking English and who informed us that the air conditioning was "closed". The manager it seems is trying to save money by forcing guests to endure hot sleepless nights. When I continued to complain I was told to "open the window" - with a very noisy street right outside and a mosque next door, not an option and hardly an acceptable recommendation for a so-called 3-star hotel. Finally in desperation I asked for a fan and they managed to locate an old one with a broken base that we had to prop up against the wall, far from ideal. Air conditioning is a stated feature of this hotel and is the reason we chose it above lots of other, cheaper hotels. To me, the management actively deciding not to offer a benefit which is clearly stated on the hotel’s website and throughout all of its promotional literature is a trading standards issue. Imagine calling down to reception about the air-conditioning in a 3-star hotel in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain etc and being told that the manager refuses to switch it on and to open a window!

The other thing to beware of is we booked via Booking.com (which is the site you get directed to from Trip Advisor) and our rate was quoted in Euros. You provide your credit card details to guarantee the booking but you need to actually pay for the hotel, on check out. We didn't have any Euros with us on check out and so to pay in Turkish Lira. The hotel insisted on an exchange rate of 2.9 Lira to one Euro - the real rate is 2.5 - so our booking cost considerably more. We stayed at a number of other hotels in Turkey, booked in the same way, on our trip, and they used a reasonable exchange rate so we were not out of pocket. At this hotel the extortionate exchange rate used added another 8.8 Euros per night to the room cost. So bring Euros with you to pay!

We had booked one night in this hotel as a stopover on our way home from Iran via Istanbul. We were pretty tired when we turned up only to learn that the hotel had cancelled our booking the day before. Apparently they had tried to email us (while we were in transit) that they wanted the pincode to our credit card. As we hadn't sent it to them, they had automatically cancelled our reservation which had been made almost three months in advance. Asking for a confidentia pincode and cancelling a reservation the day before is not acceptable so we think something funny was going on. Possibly they had someone wanting to stay longer than just one night or maybe someone was planning to abuse our credit card. Luckily the receptionist helped us to find another hotel just two minutes away. However, we would like to warn other travellers of this procedure. Do NOT give out your pincode to anyone as your bank will not cover the damages if your card is abused.

We booked this hotel through a travel agency and did not expect too much of it, but we were pleasantly surprised!
The hotel is very well situated. Although when we arrived it was already dark and the street looked a bit dodgy. But when we got to know where we were it wasn't at all.
The tram is very nearby and Sulthanamet district is only 3 stops away.

One of the big plus sides of this hotel is the lovely rooftop pool!!
it was so nice to cool off a little bit after walking around in 30 degrees all day!!

The rooms are also very nice. Not really big, but nice and clean and the bed was good!

Before we left, some people said it would be better to be in a hotel near Taksim Square but I was so glad we did not do that. We thought Taksim was not a nice neighbourhood at all!

Location is great. Located in Laleli which is a popular shopping area and very close to most popular tourist attractions. The tram station is 3 minutes walk and the Grand Bazaar is 10 minutes walk. Taxi stand is 50m from the hotel. The furniture is new and the beds are so comfortable. The breakfast is excellent. Fantastic selection of seasonal fresh fruits, cheeses and hot meals. My 2 year old son was having so much fun in the roof swimming pool. Everything was perfect and the Hotel staff were going out of their way to assist us. Best value for many and we will ONLY stay in this hotel in future.

Room Tip: Very spacious family rooms. New furniture and comfortable beds.

Although not the greatest hotel ever, we really enjoyed our stay here. it takes 5-10 mins n the tram to all the major sights, the breakfast is fresh and varied and there's a lovely roof terrace with a pool. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had no problems during our stay. The only thing I would say that is a drawback is that taxi's cannot find this hotel very easily. Our room was a good size, but the bathroom is a bit small with a low ceiling above the shower so if you're a large tall man I wouldn't recommend this hotel! don't bother booking a shuttle with the hotel as taxi's to and from either aiport are much cheaper.
