We spent some time in Tashkent when it was part of the Commonwealth of Independent States under Gorbachev - quite a while ago. It was between flights. We were told that most of the city was routinely leveled by earthquakes, so there were no surviving ancient sites, just recreations.

I lived in Tashkent for about three years from 1996 till the end of 1998.I used to vist Tashkent every year since them at least one month a year.I liked the city and the people.If I have time I would live there till the end of my life.

Despite its modern appearance, Tashkent lacks neither beauty nor culture; this city of 2.3 million is surprisingly green, thanks to its beautifully laid-out parks and its glistening fountains.

The excursion train to Samarqand on weekends was a treat. Our experience is limited but the European style compartments and modern train made the 4-hour trip enjoyable. A stewardess served tea and a snack meal and other items were available for a fee. The time schedule allowed for 5 full hours in Samarqand before returning to Tashkent in the evening. We hired a driver who ferried us between landmarks for a very reasonable amount. He said the going rate was 30,000 Sum ($30) but we bargained for less because it was the off-season. We ate at a very local type of eatery, and enjoyed the day tremendously. We had a Russian speaker with us, which improved communication, but the adventuresome can get along just fine.
