“City with a perfect blend...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2010

Colombo is a perfect blend of colonial architecture & modern sky scrapers, a multitude of cultures & religions, world cuisine & Sri Lankan staples and the finishing touch a uniquely Sri Lankan hospitality.

So here are my tips for Colombo;

Hotels:
For five star luxury stay at the Hilton, Cinnamon Grand or Cinnamon Lakeside.
For a Boutique Hotel experience try out Tintagel (the former home of a Sri Lankan first family)

Food:
Sri Lankan Chinese is a MUST try - you've never had Chinese food like it - Chinese Dragon at the Taj Colombo or Flower Lounge are my favourite picks.

Shopping:
For a uniquely Colombo experience visit Cantaloupe Boutique at Galle Face Court (a landmark colonial building) this mini department store offers an ideal combination of Sri Lankan fare, from clothing to spa products, spices and gifts.

Trishaws:
For an adrenalin rush take a trip in Colombo's colourful transport solution.

My final tip - New Years Eve. 31st Night parties in Colombo are legendary. Make sure you have a group to enjoy is with and be prepared to dress up.

“Sri lanka”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2010

Beautiful country- a paradise for beach lovers
can be a romantic or family holiday destination
Clean roads
Helpful locals
Safe country with high security all over
Most stores close by 8:30pm & restaurants by 10:30pm IST
cheap shopping for clothes, home decoratives, cutlery ( esp Noritake + Lankan porclain)
The Lankan handicrafts ( Wood work , colourful masks, zen themes) will be a great buy but definitely require hard bargaining.
Autos require pre fixing of price to any destination, they dont run on meters
Intercity transportation via Trains is economical & great as the train lines run parallel to the ocean all across.
Lankan cusine is nice n fairly cheap. Sea food is a delight

“Not for tourists”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2009

I recently visited Colombo for 2 days and was not at all impressed by anything. It is a commercial city without any tourist attractions. Due to security issues, there is heavy army presence everywhere in the city. Though army is non intrusive to an extent, there presence everywhere does not help either. Add to this the hot and humid climate, its not fun to even walk around in the city. All this reduces the tourism traffic thereby further reducing options for tourists and sending prices upwards.

Experience at airport was more like that on any Indian airpot - lot of taxi drivers waiting to take you for a ride!!! And be aware of auto rickshaws in the city, they can be quite pursuasive in trying to trick you into taking a tour around the city. Within a one hour walk around city, I met 3 people who tried to take me to an unbelievable sale or city tour for cheap. One of them was very well dressed and appeared to be quite educated and friendly. Thanks to a friendly local shopkeeper, I came to know about such touts and was cautious.

Overall, I would say that avoid spending anytime in Colombo and head to some better tourist destinations, which I am sure there will be plenty in Sri Lanka itself.
