“Relaxing”

Nice evening walk for city dwellers. Most of the cultural and heritage centres are located here.

“Nothing much there!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2011

Nothing much there - some shops, a nice street! The shops here tend to be a bit expensive too. There are nicer places to be in Colombo.

“Viharamahadevi Park”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2009

The "Park" is the lungs of the Colombo City and is situated right opposite the Colombo Municipal Council.

It is small and simple, compared to parks in the west.

The ideal time to visit is for a morning walk at 6am or in the evening after 5pm. In between these times, the park is frequented by lovers, who use it as a meeting place!

Lonely female travelers should be careful as not to walk alone in lonely areas, as sometimes there could be lone men who could follow you or sit and stare! There are also stray dogs, who frolic in the park,- quite harmless, but best not to pet.

The park is named after a princess who was sacrificed by her own father to appease the Gods who caused a flood in Sri Lanka. But the boat she was in drifted along the coast and a prince from another area in Sri Lanka rescued her!

“Green Path Art Gallery in the heart of Colombo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2007

Green-path or Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha is a broad two-way traffic road that outlines the southern end of Viharamadevi park (originally Victoria Park), in Colombo 07. While one side boasts the National Art Gallery, home to many antiques and cultural artefacts, the “park side” of Green-path is now hailed as an artist’s haven, where around 20-30 artists exhibit their work.

The paintings cover the entire fence—immense six by five canvases and quaint two by twos, all hang in rows, sometimes spilling over to the eastern and western sides of the park. In the shade of the trees that line the southern-side of the park and against the back drop of multiple shades of green, the vibrant blues, reds, browns and whites stand out. Giant frangipani and orchids, wide hipped-women harvesting crops and dazzling Perehara scenes that almost drug the eyes.
