We were picked up from the airport by a car arranged by the hotel and arrived an hour later. We were dropped off with our luggage and left standing like fools. No one on reception.
The first thing I really didn't like was the huge plastic banner which announces to all that they are Trip Advisor's #1 hotel. I'm sure everyone who comes here already knows, so why the need to advertise it at the entrance to your hotel? It looked tacky.
Finally someone appeared who became our butler. We had picked a Corporate Suite - two absolutely huge rooms. Very clean. Interesting features. We loved the free standing huge glass shower cubicle. But the rooms are so large they are crying out for a little more furniture .. or something. Certainly, the lounge area is crying out for bigger furniture. At present it's just not a room you want to enjoy and sit in and watch TV or a DVD.
The biggest letdown is the pool area and the outside seating at the front of the hotel. They are dirty and shabby (and not in a chic way). All the white PVC loungers around the pool are stained (probably from the plants, trees and birds), seams are coming apart, paint work is peeling, and the whole area badly needs decorating. We are in High Season, this should have been done before the season started. The swimming pool also needs some attention.
Note to whomever looks after the water in the swimming pool: PLEASE STOP filling it with bleach. All my brand new swimwear is now bleached. I thought I was going mad wondering why all the colours were now horribly faded and brown, and then I could smell the stench of bleach on them all. Thank heavens I never ducked my head under the water - who knows what the bleach would do to someones eyes!!! This is completely irresponsible, unacceptable and dangerous. They should try using the bleach on the surrounding garden furniture if they have it in abundance.
Regards the front of building seating area - staff really need to make an effort to wipe down tables and seats. I never saw this done. You have to check everything before you sit down otherwise clothes will be stained and possibly ruined. And surely a table should always be wiped before someone sits at it? Also the area is covered with sand. So, sand gets traipsed into the hotel and gets in your shoes. You don't wear shoes on the beach, so why would you want sand at a city hotel where you may be wearing shoes especially of an evening when you're avoiding getting bitten by mosquitos? This area needs decking or something ....
Most of the staff were great - certainly always willing to help. But there is a very informal relationship with the management, and it is odd seeing staff watching TV or playing games on their phones (or whatever gadget) in front of guests whilst sat at the reception.
Music: was it necessary to have loud music around the pool .. and more music in the lobby and at the front of the hotel and in the restaurant? I got the feeling the hotel wants to be a hip and trendy happening hotel. That's fine if you're in Ibiza and attracting only 18 year olds and backpackers. However, Casa Colombo is currently attracting all age groups, and they don't all want club music everywhere they go - the only escape being in your room.
So, overall, a reasonable boutique hotel with some pleasant staff which has some interesting design features but seriously needs redecorating and a good clean. Money certainly needs to be spent to make the reality look as good as the fabulous glossy website photos.
At present Casa Colombo is clearly resting on its laurels due to being #1 on Trip Advisor, however, there's seriously good competition not too far away. And if I return to Sri Lanka Casa Colombo will not be my first choice. I would certainly pick the Tintagel as my #1, The Wallawa as #2, if I needed to spend any time near, or in, Colombo.
