“Perfect base for exploring Colombo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

We spent the first night of our Sri Lanka trip at the Lake Lodge. After a long flight and an even longer taxi ride into the city with a taxi driver who seemed like he'd never been to Colombo before, this was the perfect spot to relax and recover. Because of the hotel's popularity, only the Garden Suite was available when we came to book - this is a really good choice, as it feels very private with it's own separate entrance and veranda. Dinner on our own private table was an early highlight of the trip! The room is very spacious and has everything you could need, comfortable bed, sofa, room service and a huge bathroom.

Breakfast was also very good the next morning, and we also found that the location was very convenient for exploring Colombo - an easy walk to the lake and Gangaramaya Temple, and a short tuk tuk ride from Galle Face Green & the Fort.

Highly recommended for a quiet, relaxing stay in the middle of the city. Just make sure you book early, and also find out exactly where it is on a map, as many tuk tuk & taxi drivers don't seem to know where it is!

We only stayed in Colombo for one night but we were very happy with the Lake Lodge Hotel. It is fairly centrally located, a 5 minute tuk tuk ride to the sea front and the main shopping streets. The rooms were very clean, modern and comfortable. No view from the windows of the rooms on the ground floor, just the building next door, although this didnt bother us as we were out all day. The breakfast was good, consisting of fresh fruits, toast and eggs, or a Sri Lankan style breakfast of string hoppers. The staff were helpful and organised our taxi to the airport on the day we left. The only slightly negative thing to say is that because the hotel is tucked away down a small road, some taxi and tuktuk drivers had difficulty finding it.

All the reviews written below are true. This is a gem, my perfect combination of style, design, comfort, quietness, perfect location, size, price...I don't have many words to say how much I love this hotel. I wish there is one like this in every city I visit or stay. Thank you for everything, I'll be back.

We cannot praise this hotel and it's staff highly enough. The position is ideal, providing total calm yet accessible to all the city attractions. We were made really welcome, even though we were only stopping for our first night in Sri Lanka and they arranged our onward transport for us so we could concentrate on relaxing and enjoying our first day in the sun. Rooms are well planned and comfortable and meals of a very high standard. We even returned for lunch on our way home at the end of our holiday and wished we had been able to spend a couple more nights there. It was far and away the best of our hotels on our self planned trip. Fair warning though, if you want to stay there, you must book in good time as the 13 rooms are full every night, all booked ahead. Mike and Karen.

We too stayed here on our first night in Sri Lanka. It was an oasis of calm and tranquility in the midst of this hectic city. Excellent situation near the lake and about 20 minutes walk from Galle Face Green. The rooms were very comfortable , spacious and well equipped. The staff were lovely and helpful. We ate in and the Sri Lankan curry with all its accompaniments was the best meal we had on our two week tour of Sri Lanka.

We stayed one night at our arrival in Sri Lanka and we do not regret that choice! The place is very elegant, a mix of white and polished concrete. Very quiet too, we slept like stones, the bed was very comfortable (which is not always the case In SL).
It is very close to the Temple.
The staff is very nice and very helpful.
If we come back to Colombo, we would definitely stay there again.

A piece of advice: go have lunch at Hotel of Pilawoos (best place for Kotthu roti) or Green Cabin (try the lamprais).
For diner, go to the Gallery Cafe.
If you are tired from the flight, have a deep massage tissue at the Ceylon Spa, which is walking distance from Lake Lodge: it was really great and I am an expert in massages!!

This is a lovely hotel, very stylish and I agree with all the other comments, however just one complaint which made our short stay uncumfortable - the A/C unit in our room wasn't working properly, despite attempts to fix it by the staff, it blew our room temperature air and the fan above the bed only worked at maximum speed so the choice was between being deafened or very hot. We asked if we cold be moved to another room but were told the hotel was full although we only saw or heard one other couple. However there could have been people arriving in the early hours for all we knew. We were given 50% off our meal bill in compensation, which was a nice gesture. Don't let my moaning put you off staying here, glitches will happen anywhere.
