“Truly memorable experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

We both had a great time! That we both enjoyed ourselves is notable since one of us was a complete novice (rode more on the first day than ever had before) while the other of us is an experienced rider. Sabine and Keith do a great job of matching horses with riders and allowing riders to ride at their own comfort level. Overall organization of the trip was also first rate ranging from navigating us safely through the mess that is UB traffic to keeping us well fed on the trail. We even were taught how to tie a bowline one handed.

The scenery was spectacular at both the large scale, with beautiful hills and valleys, and the smaller scale, with a remarkable diversity of trees, flowers and insects. Seeing the golden eagle relatively ‘up close’ was a real highlight.

If you’re looking for an active vacation in a beautiful place that is a bit off the beaten path (and Eco-friendly) we highly recommend this trip.

Jim and Shari,

It was a pleasure to have you on the trip with us. Jim you did well with hukhboral, or the red roan. He's a real teacher. Shari, it was nice to see how easily you handled Little Big Man the young grey horse. It was clear you grew up around horses and knew them well. The whole trip was quite nice and you made it easy for us. Let us know when you want to come back for the longer trip into the wilderness.

“If you go, ride with Ston Hores Mongolia !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

I have just arrived from the trip in July.
I strongly recommend those who consider horse trekking in Mongolia to Stone Horse Mongolia for several reasons.

1) Fast response: Keith & Oggie made earnest effort to respond me via E-mail & call within 48 hours.

2) Well-prepared Equipment : The saddles are incomparably better than other outfitters'

3) Good Food: Dolzz & Sabian made best effort in preparing fresh & various foods in such a limited circumstance.

4) Hard workers: Ston Horse team members outnumber the client and do their best to help us in every way.

5) Unforgettable memories: Sabina made this unforgettable souvenir. https://www.facebook.com/stonehorsemongolia

Sung, thanks for the review. All of us really enjoyed having you along, especially the ramen night. Yes, the fly's in the backcountry can be a bit much sometimes when the flowers are in full bloom. We now provide fly nets for the helmets and hats as you suggested. Come back again.

“Can I please do it again right now?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

We just got back from an 8-day horse riding trip with Stone Horse. What a great adventure and what a professional outfit Stone Horse is! Bravo. I'm sitting here missing the feel of riding through a meadow of wild flowers, cantering along with a herd of horses, watching the horses' funny antics (they are really like happy little boys), hanging out with the plucky young dog that came along for his first expedition and had to learn how to cross rivers, eating Sabina's and Dolzoo's yummy dinners (I really love those salads, Dolzoo) and having lunch picnics at gorgeous spots, I could go on.

We had approached this trip with great trepidation because we had only ~30 hours of riding experience and the longest we had ever ridden at a go was 4 hours. Plus, the last time I camped out was when I was a child. We had only booked the trip because we really wanted to ride, and Keith's emails were so reassuring (by providing all sorts of details and not just saying it would be ok). If you are reading my review and have similar concerns, I would say that even if you ride only 1 hour a week, as long as you are broadly fit, it's really not all that hard to do 5 hours of riding per day for 8 days. We were surprised as well, but it's true! We went to bed each night somewhat tired but would wake up the next day rested and ready to go.

To be honest, it wasn't all a piece of cake. There were low points, for example, the insane number of flies and mosquitoes (apparently excessive even for locals), that it wasn't always possible to take a proper bath or wash my hair (though remembering myself squealing as my husband poured ice-cold creek water on my hair to wash it is quite funny) and being caught in a downpour and freezing. But Keith and team did a wonderful job of making things as comfortable as possible; they provided sleeping pads in addition to the sleeping bags, always had hot water and snacks ready, and prepared a wide variety of meals for dinner. Stone Horse also asks for your food preferences prior to the trip and then tries to accommodate you as much as possible. We actually had not realised how important eating meat at every meal is to us and had ticked the option "it's ok if we don't get meat all the time" (no fears, we are making up for it right now).

And finally, the equipment! The western riding equipment that Stone Horse provided was top notch. This was something we quite took for granted until we met a group from another reputable outfit and saw that they only had ropes for reins, bare-bones saddles and a sad metal bar suspended by ropes for each stirrup. Check out my pictures to see what we had instead. With 8 days of riding, you would want comfort and safety.

All in all, thumbs up for Stone Horse!

Thanks for the review. Both you and Ensley did so well with the horses. Your horse riding skills improved hourly along the way and you to took to wilderness camping like a pro. A cold bucket of water in the morning can be refreshing. The horseflies this year were a bit much, even for us. With the wetter weather we experienced, the more spectacular wildflowers come out filling the valleys and making for wonderful natural scenery only found in wilderness. But, more flowers, more flies. Still, it was a great trip having you guys along even battling the elements. It's an expedition!

“Ger stay--awesomely authentic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

I had the pleasure of doing the ger stay. From getting to know the family to playing outdoor basketball on a makeshift hoop with some of the guys in the beautiful scenery, I honestly can't believe I'd feel so at home anywhere else in a place so different from it. Never felt really uncomfortable, and the people there really make the trip. And it really felt authentic, as it was a herder family. Looking forward to doing it again.

Dash, happy to hear you liked the ger stay with Yadmaa and Davasuren. It is the real herder family ger stay. The photo's of you playing basketball with the local guys, with their horses standing around is a typical scene, glad you like them.

“A real Mongolian experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013 via mobile

We had a fantastic time over the three nights that we stayed in a ger hosted by Yatmaa and Davasuren in the Darkhid Valley. As there are only two gers, this is not a tourist farming place that you see on other websites where a whole valley is full of gers and often hosted by expats. Yatmaa and Davasuren are true Mongolian herders and the experience doesn't get as genuine as this (on our first night a wolf was shot that was trying to attack the herd). Davasuren is also a fantastic cook and constantly fed us over the time of our stay. we paid for our stay directly to the local host family which is excellent. We also found Stone Horse a pleasure to deal with - Keith, who looked after our bookings, was prompt in replying to all our enquiries over email and had everything ready to go from our arrival without a hitch. The founders of Stone Horse are conservationists and are currently highly involved in the education of the local communities in regards to ecology, sustainability, tourism etc. We couldn't recommend Stone Horse nearly enough and look forward to returning to Mongolia to ride on one of their future treks.

It is a "real Mongolian experience". Thanks for the review. Yadmaa and Davasuren are real herders just going about their daily business and inviting guests to join them. Glad you liked it and see the value of supporting a local family living in the rural countryside. Hope to see you guys back here again someday.
