“we loved ganas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

we stayed at ganas three times over our time in Mongolia, and loved it there, the owner is a kind man who treated us very well keeping our favourite room for us and being geerally helpful when we needed information, he also booked us a wonderful ger camp in Kharkhorin which if your heading that way is definately worth asking about, its called Kublai Khan. The room was clean and huge with two beds and hots showers, the hotel has wifi in the lobby and serves breakfast. Although we didn't stay in it we were told that the dorm was pretty nasty, so perhaps blow your budget and opt for a private room here.

We were scooped up at the train station by a really nice driver who we never saw again. This was the highlight of our stay here. The place is pretty run down and the room was fairly dirty. The staff was never too interested in offering help. The shower leaked everywhere and was held together in several places with duct tape. There were holes in the ceiling and walls. We had booked a trip to the national park to stay in the owner's ger. Avoid this option at all costs. The ger was absolutely infested with spiders. They did not come out until night time but were unbelievably active. We killed several dozen and got almost no sleep. We are typically lenient with our ratings but we would not return here.

I stayed almost 2 complete weeks during my two months trip in Mongolia, and even if the place is convenient with (poor) wifi and hot water, everything else is just awful. The owner is nice, but the staff is not the same. The showers do not work good, it leaks from everywhere - the water go then to the rooms ! There are only two working WC for 30 people, with no paper. The dormitory is in the same room than the kitchen (!) : be prepared to wake up at 6 every morning, they just don't care about you.

This place may be OK if you ask for a private ger for 2-3 nights, but not more !

They used to be in the lonely planet, had success, but no it's no wonder why they are not in it anymore. AVOID !

Room Tip: avoid dormitory, go upstairs for a private ger for 2 people

In the city centre.
We stayed two nights at Gana's,in a room and not in a ger(for a few dollars, what do you think you'll have). Rooms are ok, but maybe Gana should paint something and reniew the showers. Good breakfast, beautiful receptionist, friendly owner(Gana).
We have booked with his agency a tour, of six days, with one of the best guide of all over Mongolia: Tom.

Good things: wifi (but only in lobby), hot water.
Bad things: breakfast not included, no sheets in the dorm, dorm is in the same room as the kitchen so extremely noisy, ceiling leaking when it rains, no toilet paper, 2 toilets and 4 showers for 30 people, no heating, the private rooms are just disgusting for the price of 25 dollars, guests not allowed to use kitchen.

Gana's guesthouse is run by Gana a friendly Mongolian man who speaks great English. The hostel will arrange for pick up from the station and there is a free breakfast. There is the option of dorms, private rooms and ger's are on top of the roof.
Gana also arranges tours to the countryside of Mongolia. We took a two day/ne night trip staying overnight in a ger and had a great time.
The location of the hostel is great, very close to the monastery and short walk to peace ave and seoul st where the bars and restaurants are. Central UB is not very big and easy to walk around. Be careful of the traffic though.
The guesthouse is of a hostel standard but doesn't provide a common area or kitchen. The helpfulness of Gana made the visit to UB much smoother and easier.
I'd head back to Gana's when I am Mongolia next.
