“Good. Not great.”
Another objective review by FattM. As always, your experience may vary.
Please, can we stop with all this fawning, cloying, "best fish and chips in Lao" nonsense? That's not a review, that's just ignorance.
What I had: fish and chips and two beers
What it cost: 78,000 kip (about £6, so hardly a fortune)
It's a decent enough place I suppose and if you want some Western food, it's not far from wherever you're likely to be. It's down the street from the Mixay temple and across from the Youth Inn 1 and the Best Western. Unfortunately, the place next to it is being added-on to so you'll have to live with sawing and hammering if you sit outside. Whatever.
If you feel like going for a walk after dinner or lunch, the river is across the street.
14,000 kip for a beer is slightly but not egregiously expensive and at least when I went, the waiters brought pitchers of water too because that's always a good idea when drinking beer in stupid hot climates you're not used to.
Fish was okay, heavily breaded, not battered. Potato wedges were actually human-sized, not the faux-American door wedges that some places serve undercooked. As fish and chips go, I can't be as ignorant as to say they were "the best in Lao". But they were okay. I suppose the rest of the menu is too.
Free WiFi is always a good feature and it's fairly quick here. Toilets are clean and easy to find (back corner on the left when you walk in). There are are also a few guidebooks lying around if you're looking for how to get to your next stop.
Sitting outside when it's not busy is a drag. Your table quickly becomes the one service forgot. But you can always just get up and walk inside to order if you're that bothered.
Generally, it'll do. It's non-threatening and everything and if you still feel hungry, there are some very tasty, and extremely much cheaper grilled chicken carts just up the road.
I don't know that looking at a semi-derelict old green building is "a great view" though.
