“A fine option”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

I would recommend staying here as it is a quality hotel and professionally run.

In the low season the prices are slightly negotiable like any hotel in SE Asia. Im not one for eating breakfast and thus they might be able to discount slightly.

Overall, location, service and value.... I would recommend this place

Room Tip: take a cheap room on the 1st or 2nd floor at the back. They have a mozzie screen door and thus one c...

We drove up to check the place out and got a very warm welcome (by the Australian owner and the front desk staff) and immediately liked the atmosphere: relaxed professional. We booked in for 1 night (we usually do and see how things are) and ended up staying 4 nights. The only reason we didn't stay the last 2 nights of our stay in Vientiane was because the hotel was fully booked.

We first had a room at the back of the place and we loved it. Ok, no view over the river, but it was very hot and we also did not have the full midday sun on the big windows. The rooms are fun and well appointed, a bit quirky (in a good way). You get free water as much as needed (in big bottles). Our last night we moved to a river view room which was fabulous, but because of the heat the A/C was struggling a bit.

We loved the Spirit House restaurant/bar/breakfast area next door. The service was the best we'd had in Laos (and we'd been traveling around the country for about 3 weeks): prompt, professional and with a smile... very pleasant! We liked the breakfast very much (we like cornflakes with fresh milk and some fruit; there were more choices). We also enjoyed lunch and dinner there and were never disappointed. And they serve a good latte as well, so I was in heaven :).

Rooms have A/C, fridge, wifi, water (as mentioned), tea, coffee, kettle, cutlery and china. Some rooms have a bath, others showers.

We liked the location a lot: close enough to walk to the downtown restaurant/bar area (about 15-20mins) or a short tuk-tuk ride. Being on the river is always nice. In the evening the waterfront area at the hotel comes alive with terraces and eateries. There is off-street parking for a 1 or 2 cars so we were lucky with that as well.

I also like to mention that we had a travel related 'logistical' issue with which the owner assisted as much as he could (allowing us to have something sent to the hotel for instance). All small things but it made it much easier for us.

We were well received and were taken up a spiral staircase to our third floor room overlooking the river with one wall all of glass, quite amazing
Unfortunately in March the river is low so the view wasn't that marvellous, mainly of mud banks
As can be seen from various photos submitted by other travellers the furnishings are non standard which is very much part of the charm and we loved it
It is noisy at the front until about 11pm as there were lots of temporary stalls, eateries etc.
We wandered about a mile down the road where there were a wide range of good value restaurants
There was a large market along the sea front which added to the vitality of the whole area
We only stayed one night but was a very pleasant experience

this is a small, western owned guesthouse with details aligned with a boutique hotel. Unfortunately this affects the price too, which is a little higher than it should. They have river view rooms and two garden view rooms, which I prefer, as the garden is a gem and it is silent, while the Mekong road as some traffic (not much, to be honest).
The fact is: Vientiane is one of the worst place in SEA in terms of accommodations. Backpacker hostels, middle class hotels, everyone has poor quality and cleanliness. Bad value for money - it's not Thailand here. Obviosuly you may go to the expensive hotels - above 100 USD for night - to feel comfortable with what you see and get. But still is bad value for money. So to me Beau Rivage is the best option if you're not on a budget (you may also want to consider V hotel - cheaper - and Best Western - more expensive in a similar range).

We stayed here for nine days, two in a garden view room and seven in a larger river view room. Both rooms had nice décor and were well appointed. The hotel staff was clearly service oriented. Why not a 5 rating? We felt that for the price, there would have been an in-room safe, the televisions in both rooms were at extremely inconvenient angles, and the set breakfast at Spirit House was lacking at this price level. While the freshly squeezed orange juice was welcome, the accompanying fruit plate (largely melons) was a disappointment to us, given the selection of fruit in the markets. The remainder of the set breakfast menu included limited choices, e.g. the only cereal offered was cornflakes. That said, Spirit House had a good lunch menu and with temperatures in the high 30’s we were very pleased that there was no need to venture further out for lunch.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river hear noise from the street and the many temporary evening restaurants. The r...

We spent two nights in this hotel at the beginning of March 2014. One of the good things about the hotel is that it isnt a large multiple impersonal hotel where you feel that all the welcomes and comments have been rehearsed beforehand. The location of the hotel is great. It overlooks the Mekong and in the evening has an interesting assortment of food establishments directly opposite. Its also a nice stroll to the night market. Its distance from the city centre is walkable or inexpensive in a taxi or tuktuk. We were received warmly on arrival and made to feel very welcome. It was a long hike up a narrow spiral staircase to our room and for anyone who has difficulty walking up steps this hotel is not for you as there is no lift. The room itself was unusual but nice. The sleeping area was separated by a screen from the shower/ bathroom/ kitchen area and there is a separate toilet. All very clean and no issues unless you are sharing with someone who you aren't close to. The staff and owner were all very helpful and pleasant even when we had to leave at 5.00am for the airport. We used the restaurant next door (which is part of the hotel) for breakfast and for dinner and the drinks and food were very good if a little on the expensive side. The staff at the restaurant are a bit slow and do need some more training although they are very pleasant. One of us didn't get their meal until the other had finished theirs for at least five minutes and the staff didn't understand the issue. Overall the restaurant catered for both tourists and expats working in Laos which made it an interesting and enjoyable experience. They arranged an excellent tuktuk tour of the city which was inexpensive. As we were departing early in the morning before breakfast they did offer us a take away breakfast which we declined and they told us to use the orange juice in the minibar without any charge. The rom also had tea and coffee making facilities. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return to this hotel if we go back to Vientiane.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the river are great although a little noisey from the people using the restaurant u...
