“Worth a spin around”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Interesting photos about the war period. There are other exhibits too, that you can peruse. Nice to get out of the sun for a bit.

“Could use a make over but interesting archeology section”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

The museum looks pretty run down all the way through, with word articles mounted on future board as explanations for the exhibits. The English translations also get worse the further into the museum you go. I did enjoy seeing some of the well-preserved exhibits from the Plain of Jars and the ancient boundary stones, as well as a well preserved child burial, found inside a pot. The upstairs of the gallery is dedicated partially to the ethnic groups of Laos, with their costumes and tools and them there are several galleries of badly preserved reproduced prints of the secret war with America, the overthrowing of the French colonialists and the rise of Communism. This is where the usual objectivity of a museum gets lost in patriotism and modern Communist propaganda and the effect is quite alienating to the visitor. There's statues of the "heroic" Lenin and Ho Chi Minh. The last part of the museum is a baffling display of things like concrete blocks (this is what people in Laos build things out of now! No more wooden struts for us!) and out of date medicines (look at how we've embraced Western medicine! We hardly ever visit the Sharman now.) and a plethora of photos of Laos government officials no one has ever heard of. I know I'm being acerbic but really it's a good wander round for an hour or so if you've nothing better to do and there's a giant carved tree in the car park that's quite spectacular.

“Some interesting exhibits but displays are poor.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

We visited the Museum in central Vientiane. The cost was small- about $3. We had read reviews about excellent displays but were disappointed as they were often poorly lit and many of the English descriptions were missing or had numerous spelling errors. There were a variety of eras covered and you were able to get an overall impression of the turmoil that Laos people had endured over many centuries. In need of a facelift!

“Definitely worth stopping by”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

We visited here for a couple of hours and it was interesting to get a historical picture of the country and to see just how much devastation has come through Laos in the form of war but it was also great to see what it was like when it prospered in ancient times as well as what the people are doing now to try and preserve the history. The museum could use a make over and some time could be spent on getting the displays looking better with some more detailed information but you still get a great picture of the history of this wonderful country.
