“Great hostel but could be cleaner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

I stayed at Sihome twice and enjoyed both my stays. It's a nice place, great for meeting new people. The free breakfast is good and the showers are fantastic. The staff are friendly and helpful. I got off a sleeper bus and arrived at 6:00 am and was allowed to check in early.

Negatives are that the bathrooms need to be cleaned more often. There are only two toilets and three showers upstairs for all of the dorm rooms to share so they get a lot of use. The only other downside of Sihome is that there is a karaoke bar or a club next door that plays very loud music late into the night.

Side note, the bus tickets that they sell at Sihome are considerably higher. I paid 160,00 kip to go from Luang Prabang and they were charging 220,000. Same with my ticket to Pakse, I went to a different travel agent and paid 160,00 when Sihome was charging 200,000 for the same ticket. It's definitely worth walking around the side streets near the night market for a cheaper ticket.

Big shout out to Philip and Jonathan! They were awesome and really made us feel at home. The place is very open and friendly and there are many activities like BBQ's and tours arranged by the hostel. It is also minutes away from the city center and the river. The rooms are really nice, and the showers are some of the best in SE Asia. We had a wonderful time here and it is definitely a place that would bring us back to Vientiane in the future.

Good Hostel, great if you are travelling solo and need to meet others. The Manager is friendly and welcomes all guests with open arms. The Staff are good and will show you all the good spots in town (Pubs / Night Clubs). Rooms are a good price and are decent. Great Pool table and common area with seating outside. Food served by the kitchen is decent but can be slow depending on the time of day.

Would recommend highly to anyone looking for budget accommodation in Vientiane.

Room Tip: Twin Share rooms are great, Large with a good AC!

Well I arrived at Sihome and was Greeted with a handshake and a welcoming smile from John and Philip the new manager. My stay was just 1 day wished I had longer to the hostels city tour which seemed to be excellent value. Dorms are very clean hot showers great hot and free breakfast was excellent. Go stay it is a very social place great meeting new travellers. Thanks Sihome

My wife and I stayed here one night and the vibe was everything you would expect from a good backpacker’s hostel. Good facilities, clean rooms and the staff were particularly helpful in helping us find our way and make plans! It’s a shame that we were unable to attend the free BBQ in the evening but the food looked amazing and the owner and staff made us feel very welcome. Location is good, and our only recommendation is to invest in a new local map rather than the photocopied drawing that didn’t help much! We’re very happy to recommend Sihome Backpackers Hostel.

So we are coming to town on the night train from Thailand and have booked our room ahead of time using Hosteworld. We received an email to confirm our stay. When we got to the hostel we were told that you are booked into our other hostel the Garden Hostel but the address is the same as this hostel and that one DOES NOT exist at all! Not sure if this is a way to get people to the hostel from next door, which is called Garden Hotel and uses the exact address they are using. So they tell us "no problem" you can stay here, we have an empty room. It's about 10:30am and they make all the new people sit in the lobby till 12:00 pm and then start telling everyone what room they are in. At 12:30 we received a key and went to our room. The room was nice and clean and looks JUST like the photos for the other hotel ( Garden Hotel ) anyway it was clean , AC, shower, towels and soap.
The hostel itself was clean and the very bare common TV area had just mats on the floor no furniture. The other area in the lobby had a pool table and a sofa.
The second night it rained INSIDE the room onto the bed....yes in the middle of the night. So we moved to the floor. In the morning, the manager said he was sorry and what could he do to make it better.... I said how about a sandwiches for our long bus ride, he said "No problem" and we left happy. I know the roof is not his problem and /or the rain that night.
We leave and a week later we are heading north to Vietiane again and decide the hostel was clean, lets go back...... This time the hostel is found on Hostelbookers and again we got an email and Hostelbookers took a deposit from us and sent us a confirmation code. ( Hostelbookers is also still showing 2 hostels for them and Hosteworld has corrected themselves and is now only showing 1)
We also sent the hostel 2 emails directly to one to ask for a certain room and then another to ask the price of a tuk-tuk ride from the bus station to the hostel.. They did not respond to any emails.
We reached the hostel after a ten hour travel day at about 5:00pm and when we got to the the hostel....you guessed it, no room and they never received our emails. Also he said they did not get an email from hostelworld he said he is having problems with them... We said "wow!", we did not use them this time we used Hostelbookers. He was thinking we booked the same way as last time and could make an excuse!
Anyway, a lot of trouble! My feeling is they are just taking the first people that come in the door OR the management is doing a poor job on checking who is booking on line and responding to people's emails.
We went to a place that is the same price in town in a better location with all the same offerings.
Last thing...I know this is a business and out to make money but I asked what is your fee for bus tickets and money exchange and I was told NONE it is a free service for our customers, not only a lie a huge lie some bus tickets are almost double. Yes the fees added will almost double your ticket pice and yes they will give you free pick up from the hostel (10 to 20 kip worth)

We took a tuk tuk from the bus station and the driver knew where to go. It might be a bit difficult to find without local knowledge - or a better map than we had. We stayed for 3 nights in a double room with bathroom.

The room was clean and had a fridge, tv, bathroom with shower as opposed to wet room, air con, wardrobe, shelves, desk and small window. The bed was really hard and the air con wasn't completely effective because there were gaps under the door and in the ceiling. It was cold enough though.

Breakfast was included in the rate and served outside the building, under a canopy. If you get to breakfast at the same time as everyone else, your breakfast might be served to someone else, but as long as you're not in a rush, that's ok. Breakfast was ok.

Big problem for me was the noise. There was noise from people coming up and down the stairs, from the kitchen and from the adjoining rooms. I don't think people were being particularly noisy, I just think the sound proofing is poor/non existent.

TIP - don't buy cans of fizzy drink from the hostel - buy from the little shop opposite as they are half the price.
