“Excellent hotel and nice restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

Excellent hotel and nice restaurant. Had a great dinner at the buffet. Comes with lots of great fresh seafood and hot pot and having a beautiful restaurant manager. Will definitely return and would recommend, my colleagues and my friends relating to this property.

The Lao Plaza usually serves the nicest buffet in Vientiane, though my visits are usually associated with business meetings. It is the Lao New Year, so restaurant choices are very limited. My logic was that as one of the premier hotels in town, they should serve decent food a la carte. My assumption was challenged today when a simple cheeseburger and piece of pie turned into a ma... Microwave use in kitchens should be heavily restricted

The 9$ USD burger arrived beautifully presented, but raw on the inside. The waitstaff friendly and responsive, said that they would take care of it. The burger when returned, was cooked extra well done, they had taken the entire burger (including bun, lettuce, tomato slices etc) and microwaved it for several minutes. The result was hardly edible.

For desert, I asked for piece of apple pie with a scoop of ice cream. The pie arrived chilled and when I commented the waiter put his finger on the pie and agreed that it was indeed cold. I requested that it be heated in an oven (versus microwaved). It was returned well-microwaved, but this time I sent it back. The pie (5 USD) was eventually returned, nicely oven-warmed, next to a small scoop of mostly melted ice cream.

On a positive note, the staff were both friendly and responsive.

I felt they are trying really hard to be a top-end hotel. The staff is very friendly and tries hard, but you can see they are not very experienced. I found the rooms nice, clean and spacious, internet working fine (although only on one device at a time). The lobby area is nice, and they don't bother you to have a drink every time which was great, not intrusive at all. Free airport transfer is great too.

The Japanese restaurant downstairs is excellent too! Breakfast average though.

Why is it that the more expensive a hotel the more likely they are to charge for Wi Fi?
At this hotel, described as 4 stars for Laos, whatever that means , they charge a huge amount for it , when we stay at a hostel , backpackers or normal hotel it comes in free of charge ? I don't get it.

Room Tip: Not really sure , only stayed in one room

I have to confess that the reviews of this place did not fill me with much confidence but the folks in our local office insisted that the hotel was back to its best - and they were right.
As 5 star hotels go this one is not in the Premier League, and might even struggle to stay in the Championship, but it ticks all the boxes and remember that this is PDR Laos and not Singapore.
I had a very spacious 6th floor suite comprising a reception area with sofa, TV and fridge and stairs to a 7th floor bedroom/bathroom. The fittings were modern throughout and everything worked. The bed was especially comfortable. Whilst I did not eat in I did spend a short time on the pool terrace and again it ticked all the boxes. And as for the staff, most of whom were quite young and obviously still learning, I could not fault their effort (again remembering that this is communist PDR Lao where customer service does not come naturally). And all for $125 a night.
What more do you want?

Room Tip: Don't look out the back.

Lao Plaza hotel certainly was not a 5 star hotel. It was clean and comfortable. But imagine my surprise to find that prostitutes were brought in for some guests! And the management seemed to be aware of it.

The rooms were very modern with all the essentials: a comfy bed, a safe, a refrigerator and a clean bathroom. However, they were a bit small, but I don't specifically have an issue with that.

I found the breakfast to be adequate, but nothing special. The coffee was just awful, however. In another hotel in Vientiane where we stayed, we got nice, brewed-by-the-cup coffee, here it was out of a pot, and it tasted as though it had been brewed hours earlier.

I think my favorite thing about this hotel is that each day, they change the carpet in the elevator to read the day of the week. We found it to be funny and sweet.

I guess the bottom line is that you can't go wrong with this hotel, but it isn't one I will think about to.
