This place is AMAZING!! I love the bread and the sandwiches are delicious. I ate there every day i was in Vientiane and I can't wait to go back. The carmel custard is my favorite desert and theres just zoo much more I need to try.

“Chic cafe (by Vientiane standards)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

This is the best bakery in VNN, in my view. If you want to load up on carbs, then come here. But if you are are looking for a cafe meal of a different nature - say, eggs benedict or a grilled chicken salad - this is probably not your best bet. The menu makes it clear that this place revolves around the Great God of Pastry. The best deals are on things like croissants, quiche, danishes. Brilliant! But personally I can't stomach that sort of thing in the morning and the menu leaves you wondering what else is on offer. That said, they understand the concept of espresso, here, and that is all you really need in life.

“Place for Breakfatst”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

You don't have too much place for breakfast in Vientiane. If yes, let me know.
I recommend this place for breakfast with croissants, excellent bread and other various choice. Sandwiches are excellent too. Meanwhile the lunch is interesting too as I had once, consisting of pannini and other plates which I forgot names (sorry for that). Fairly pleasant flavor.

The ambiance is fine and prices are reasonable.

“This is the place to go for good espresso and perfect French pastries”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Le Banneton sells croissants, tarts, mousse, bread, various pastries, and various lunch items such as baguette sandwiches, puff pastry, pannini, tartine, salad, and ice cream, The croissants come as plain, butter, pan au chocolat, almond, ham and cheese. They are expert with coffee drinks.
We tried the plain and butter croissants; get the butter. The crust is nicely crisp and flaky. The inside is light, tender-flaky with a very slight butter taste. Overall, an A- rating and better than 95% of the croissants available in the U.S. Mousses, almond/blueberry tarts are very good, as well. All three times the espresso at the Vientiane location was very good, and twice at the Luang Prabang location. The espresso was more complex and had slightly more body at the Vientiane location. The crema at both locations was a little thin, but the body and taste were very good. The taste starts out as chocolaty, then wheaty, then finishing off as a blackberry note. The large coffee (not large by U.S. standards) was also very good. We also enjoyed the lemon tart, the blueberry/almond custard tart, the apricot tart, and the chocolate mousse. All were expert.
Most of the table chairs are cushioned and there is one loveseat at a low table. This location is more comfortable than at L.P., where there are fewer cushions. The location is in the heart of Mixai (Mixay), the expat enclave. The regulars were all French when we were at the Vientiane location. We had lunch there once, consisting of tartine Marie, and a BLT pannini. Both were good, the pannini being slightly tastier. The ambiance, food quality and coffee put Joma to shame. The prices are slightly better, as well.

For my general rant regarding 'authentic' Lao food and Lao dining in general, stay in the Lao>Vientiane section and search for "Dining Overview" in the search box at the top of the page.
