We stayed at this hotel for longer than expected as it was so nice. We are backpacking so trying to stay in the cheapest places and occasionally find hotels like this one that does all the right things at a very good price. The welcome when you arrive or indeed when passing reception is always pleasant with smiles and usually every staff member saying hello, a very nice touch and doesn't cost anything to be nice! We paid 115,000 kip per night for a good sized beautiful clean double room. We had two large windows overlooking the neighbouring monks accommodation with loads of sunlight. The room was freshly decorated and newly tiled wet room which had soap dispenser on the wall and huge roll of toilet paper, minimal and clean like the bedroom. We had cable tv and air conditioning, fresh towels daily and a very polite team of cleaners doing a great job! After our first night and for every day following we were given each a complimentary tea or coffee and cake served in the reception area during the afternoon which was a really really nice touch. The lady manager also made us a sweet mango and rice dish following a conversation during which we said we hadn't tried it. The reception area was also where you can access the hotels free WI FI.
Vientaine has a Thai Consulate (a new address) where we paid 1,000 BAHT (they only accept baht) for a SIXTY DAY visa for our return to Thailand, if you just cross the border you only get a 15 DAY visitor visa at the border!!! Arriving via airport gets you a 30 DAY visa (flights are not cheap) so we thought 1,000 BAHT (approx £20) was really worth it. You need two passport size photo's, passport and 1,000 baht. You can only apply in the morning and you must pick up in the afternoon of the next day! When arriving in Vientaine from Vang Vieng we were dropped by bus outside "The National Stadium" to be greeted by the awful Tuk Tuk drivers who charged us 50,000kip (RIP OFF) and took us a crazy long way to justify the money, we later realised it was less than a five minute walk to Mixay Paradise Hotel and most of the hotels. I'm pretty sure Lonely Planet also warns about Tuk Tuk drivers here so I made sure they didn't make any more money out of me, we just walked everywhere!.
We found Mixay Paradise Hotel to be great for prices for trains and buses to Bangkok and everything went smoothly and once again the reception staff and manager were super helpful.
NOTE.....Save 12,000 kip or $2 (us dollars) for the stamp fee....departure thing or......whatever they are charging us for at the border with Thailand!!! If you don't have 12,000 kip they were accepting bizzare kip and dollar combo's that didn't make any sense and have me questioning Laos border employees!!!!
Ask for a bigger room and to move if one becomes available, we did!
