“Strangely disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2009

Considering the price and appearance of the hotel, you would expect better. Everything is shiny and polished and the check-in process always goes smoothly, but I've never been completely happy after my stays here. Every nice touch (complimentary slippers, a nice selection of teas and coffee, in-room electric kettle, heated bathroom floor) is balanced by something weird or unpleasant (shower drain covers floating around your feet, glass shower doors apparently designed to hit the bidet when you get out of the shower, and temperature controls merely decorative). Plus, the last time I was there I placed an order with room service; while the service was prompt, the burger I ordered arrived without the meat inside. The replacement sandwich contained meat but was not what I'd ordered. While I ordinarily love lotteries, with my dinner involved it's not as entertaining. I don't know if I'll be back.

The hotel is in the middle between the old and new part of Astana so well placed to go either way. A bit isolated as not much is close but the mall is just 1 km down the road. Rooms larger than other 5 stars in Astana and very clean. And the staff throughout seems to have gone through some awareness training as everyone was friendly and helpful.Complimentary internet for a 5 star - finely! Only issue is the gym/pool is not part of the hotel so you need vouchers from the desk each time you go. Food is pricey but what isn't in Astana? The new Austrian chef has made positive changes to the menu in the main restaurant and will be working on the lobby one shortly. Overall, a great experience.

The hotel is non-descript post-modern boredom. The service in the main bar is terrible, executed by teenagers who do anything to avoid eye contact or taking an order. The cigar bar is better, but why they insist on running stupid music shows that make conversation impossible is beyond me. Never mind... Prices are high, but not as ridiculously high as in the Hyatt in Almaty.

My room was not cleaned the second day of my stay, even though the sign to clean it was left outside (I did spend a lot of time in the room, admittedly, but for a 5-star it should have been possible to clean it).

The advertised gym facilities are not actually in the hotel but necessitate an underground treck to another building. They seem nice though.

Service at breakfast is soso.

Now, if you make the big mistake of ordering a Caesar salad, make sure to bring stomach medicine. I lost a day due to that. When I pointed that out at reception I was met with a reaction that clearly indicated that the lady behind the counter did not give a hoot "Oh, I am going to tell the kitchen about it..." yeah right.

The Radisson maybe the only half-decent hotel in Astana - if so, that would be the only reason for me to return there.

Fantastic hotel but very pricey. The rooms are spacey. There is no gym for the hotel but one is available, for a price, nearby. There is a restaurant, disco, cigar bar, as well as a lobby bar at the hotel itself. Service is first rate and appearance first class. Many good restaurants within walking distance. The hotel is very close to a popular park and strolling/jogging along the river is pleasant too.

  • Liked — The shower in the room.
  • Disliked — $10/minute internet access for unbelieveably slow service.
