“Needs a face lift, not a 5 star - for sure”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2009

This is potentially a great hotel, but it seems as if it has been years since it was renovated. Some of the rooms stink from years of smoking (including what was supposed to be non smoking room), and since everything is pretty old, it simply doesn't feel clean.
Another big minus, is the face that you can't open the window (well, during the harsh summers winters you wouldn't want to do that, but when the weather is okay, it's the best way to get the stench out).
Another problem: the food. The breakfast is fine, but the lunch and dinner are terrible and overpriced. Often, hotels in such cities tend to be the best places to dine, and since there is nothing in a walking distance near the hotel, I ate there quite a lot. The food in the city is cheaper and better.
All and all this is a very nice hotel, with very friendly staff, but it's really overpriced and in need of urgent renovations.

Stayed at Rixos Astana for three nights at the end of May. Check-in and check-out was OK, no probem. Staff at the reception were very nice and helpful. As most of the 5* Turkish run hotels, this one looks very nice outside - rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated, the lobby and bars are quite nice too.

But the hotel lack some basic things you would expect from a hotel charging almost USD 500 per night. Internet is virtually non-existent amid slow speed. Gym was a very small room.

My room did not get cleaned until after 5 pm.

But the worst part was food - the breakfast was one of the worst I have ever had at 5* star hotels. Same with lunch and dinner.

But the staff at the restaurants and bars did their best to deliver drinks and food quickly.

The location of the hotel is a bit away from the center (if there is such a thing in Astana), there is nothing really close to the hotel - only on-going construction. On the other hand, within a 15 walk there is long street with nice restaurants (try an Uzbek one Alasha, do not go to a Ukrainian, Melnitza (Windmill) and two shopping centers.

Airporti is about 15-20 minutes drive away.

Next time I would probably stay at Radisson which is closer to restarants and clubs.

I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights and found the spa absolutely amazing. Great rooms, modern interior, lovely view.

Generally this is a good hotel. It's well equipped and there's free internet. It's just not consistent. The staff training is not there. I have stayed here 5 or 6 times and know it very well. If you order the same thing from the room service menu, it will probably look quite different each time. Quite a surprise - as long as it's a pleasant surprise. The small things let the hotel down. It would be very good otherwise. It's difficult to get coffee at breakfast, the airconditioning is completely changeable and sometimes gets too warm and you can't sleep, they write your room number in indelible ink when you submit laundry, internet goes down a lot and it's sometimes difficult to make yourself understood in English.
The staff are friendly and happy to oblige but are sometimes obviously not aware how things should be done at a hotel at this level.
The location is convenient for the new business district and I can walk to work which is the main reason that I continue to stay here even though there are a couple of other options in town. The only thing that's really annoying is that the airconditioning is bad. 25 or 26 Celcius in the room is too hot to sleep comfortably - and that's when it's zero outside. The windows don't open.

Well Astana has long needed some competition to the other 5-star mainstay - the Intercontinental. The Rixos is the new competition, and it is located in a more "interesting" part of town - in the midst of the new diplomatic district, right off the main construction strip in the middle of town.

The upside of the location is that you can look at whatever new mirror-glass wonder has been built since you last visited. The downside of the location is that (like many places in Astana) it is surrounded by construction sites - over the two days I was there the pile-driver on the construction site next door started at 8am and kept going most of the day....

The room was comfortable, though the TV channel selection very poor and the reception only worked about a 1/3 of the time. The breakfast buffet was very good, and if having your cereal whilst been serenaded by a harp player is your idea of a good time then the Rixos President is the place for you.

But there are still a lot of things this hotel hasn't figured out - how to quickly replace lights; an absence of soap trays in the bathroom; dodgy tv reception; erratic internet connectivity... the hotel seems unfinished and inexperienced. They should stop spending money on the the harp player and the odd lady in a pointy hat offering you snacks in the lobby, and concentrate on those boring things that make a stay worthwhile.

Based on this stay I'd say they're still marginally behind the Intercontinental, and as the latter is cheaper, Rixos needs to try harder.

  • Liked — The fact that it wasn't the intercontinental

I stayed for three nights at Rixos President Hotel Astana. It is in a very convenient location, close to airport and the new administrative center. They assigned me a superb deluxe room and I had a nice welcome letter and a tray of snacks. The staff was very friendly and the service was great.
