“A very nice and clean place in the heart of new Astana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2013

We shared a room with a friend in August 2013.
The room was clean and nicely decorated.
The food was decent and not pricey.
The receptionnist helped us to sort the booking for our next destination (we do not speak russian nor kazakh) and has been very patient with us and even used her own mobile phone to do so.
The hotel is 2 km from the main buildings of the New Astana and therefore quite handy to visit the city.
A very good and helpful place to stay in Astana.

We would definitely stay here again. It's a B&B (except we didn't see evidence of breakfast) with Mega just down the road (10 min walk) so the location is great and the price is perfect. We don't speak Russian but reception was very patient and helped us use google translate on their computer. There are only about 5 bedrooms in the whole place and it's in a quiet backstreet. It's not particularly easy to find so I suggest you print a map from your booking website and take it with you. Approx half the taxi drivers seemed to be able to find it without a problem - and the other half used our little printed map. Take a card from reception to help.

Ulpan Guest House is not modern, but still a good alternative to the very expensive hotels in Astana. We paid $160 per night for four people using 2 of their 5 rooms. It’s more like a B & B, really. They let us check in early after flying overnight. There is no air conditioning; but even in July the heat was tolerable. Breakfast of 3 somewhat-cooked (fried) eggs per person and lots of toast is included. Free wi-fi in the hotel. Khan Shatyr and Bayterek Tower are about a 30-minute walk from the hotel. Difficult to find: a GPS and knowledge of the address are very useful because the building isn't even marked. Staff's knowledge of English is limited, but they try to be helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms vary in price: some have refrigerators and even a balcony!
