“Nice room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights in August whilst exploring Phnom Penh. The room was fine with a comfy bed, well functioning air con and cable tv, and the bathroom was clean (very small but that wasn't a problem for us). I think we had one of the cheapest rooms as it had no windows, as it was just for 2 nights we didn't mind, but for longer stays I'd recommend paying a bit more for a room with windows as its abit claustrophobic!
As other users have commented the owner was very pushy with tours etc, it would literally be the first thing he said as soon as we came out of our room. We had already arranged a day tour through the rickshaw man who picked us up from the bus station so we didn't need to use the guesthouse owners driver, and felt uncomfortable telling him this!
If a guesthouse is going to recommend drivers/tours etc then that's great, but it doesn't need to be done so forcefully!
We had our laundry done whilst we were here too, the rates were good but it was returned to us still slightly damp.
The owner and his brother who run the place were very friendly, until we had all paid and checked out, after which the owner turned abit wierd. We asked him for directions to the bakery so we could get some snacks for our bus to Siem Reap, without looking up from his computer he barked 'left then left'. We attempted to follow these rather vague instructions but could find no bakery so went back. He was still looking at his computer, I tried to say 'excuse me' to get his attention but he completely ignored me, and when I tried again he turned around and shouted at me 'I already told you! Left then left!' I was quite offended by his tone of voice and rude manner and we still couldn't find the bakery so we have up.
I felt like now we had paid up and checked out, he felt like he didn't need to be polite anymore.
Furthermore, we had booked onward bus tickets to Siem Reap through the guesthouse, but when the bus picked us up it became apparent they had booked us the wrong tickets and we were being taken to Sihanoukville instead. The bus company were nice and managed to fit us onto the right bus (although it was full so my boyfriend had to sit up front with the driver) but we were very unimpressed that the guesthouse had made the mistake in the first place. Whilst we were at the bus station waiting to be put on the correct bus, the bus company called the guesthouse to find out why they had booked the wrong ticket, and the guesthouse apparently told the bus company they knew nothing about the mix up.
As a hotel the rooms are fine and I'd recommend as a base but brace yourself for the pushyness with tours, and if you book bus tickets through them, make sure they are to the right destination!

Fancy Guesthouse is currently my favourite guesthouse to be at in Phnom Penh. Though it may be considered on the higher end of prices for a guesthouse, it depends on what you value as to if you want to scrimp and save. The best part is they have options to suit backpacking budgets and rooms with balconies going at a higher rate. Rooms were quoted as $18, $23 and $28 though were willing to make it $25 if we stayed for the week. It was a relief to find a well run and well organised place to stay that is incredibly clean and well cared for. The best part is the working, clean and non-mouldy AC which is much appreciated, also the TV has a lot of cable channels and there is lots of lighting in the room and a neat bathroom with new shower and heater. The bathroom may be considered small in comparison, but how much time does one need to spend in the shower, as long as it is clean that is all that matters and I couldn't find fault with hygiene. Linen and towels are clean and rooms are cleaned each morning. The rooms also have tea and coffee facilities and 2 bottles of water in the bar fridge daily.

The location is close enough to walk to the central market area, the river (joining in at the corner of Blue Pumpkin) or take the other way and you end up near the University of fine arts with painting shops and cafes and plenty of things to see and do including the Royal Palace. The manager suggested we go to BKK1 area to eat and arranged the tuktuk to drive us there and it offered a change of scene with new restaurants and shops. The manager also is able to assist with any other needs and staff are always hanging out in the lobby and can help with any concerns.

The other added bonus here that many places in Phnom Penh don't offer is the use of a safety deposit box for personal items such as passports, bank cards, cameras and other small items. Though the rooms are secure, they advise that this option is here if guests wish to take it and I am sure that most do for peace of mind.

One note that is worthy of a mention is that you will probably here the noise from a dance club near by, its not overwhelming and it is very common here in the city, many places it feels like you are sleeping on the floor of the club, so this guesthouse does its best. If you want to avoid it, get some earplugs or chose a room furthest from the road side and put on your AC.

All in all, this place is perfect for couples, safe for families and a little more upmarket for solo travellers needing a few nights in a decent bed.

I highly recommend staying here.

Very friendly and thoughtful staff. Very very clean room, cleaned daily. Perfect location, close to art street and riverside. Nothing fancy, with modest sized room but it's all you need when you are out and about all day- a friendly greeting to come home to, and an immaculate room to scrub the day away.

Since this is my 1st time to combodia i was reading alot about the country to move around comfortably according to their living style. It was good and in Fancy GH the rooms are indeed to our meet for we were 4 of us . 1st time on tour experienced removing shoes before going in.
anyway i was fine with it for the GH was clean and nice. Mr Phanak is a humble and friendly Gentle Man. We were even more comfortable with the lady ( forgot her name ) who spoke so well and listen to our need and plan. booked our ticket to Siem Reap. Kepts us well updated too. Mr Phanak's brother was also great in receiving us . stayed 3 nights and was all good.
closed to any where to go around in phnom penh. walking distance to the Water front , food restaurants , bus stations etc. all mails were replied fast and quick on any enquiries which gave me real good confident. IF the rooms have had hot pots for coffee/tea would have been great . Thats the only lack for me :). on the whole we did not face any disturbance during our stay. Keepup your good service Mr Phanak. Wish you all the best.

Stayed here in August. The rooms were very clean and the owner/manager very helpful. The guest house is a small street close to the riverside and other tourist destinations. I would definitely stay here again.

Phannak and his team were quick on their feet to welcome us to Fancy Guesthouse when we arrived. They had arranged pick up for us from the bus depot, and made us feel really relaxed after a long bus ride from Siem Reap. Phannak's staff are very knowledgeable about the area and willing to arrange every last detail for you if you're too exhausted to think, including trips within Phnom Penh, other connecting bus trips, and recommending & booking suitable hotels and guesthouses in other towns (eg. Sihanoukville). While in Phnom Penh itself, Fancy guesthouse provided a home away from home, comfortable, affordable, beautiful rooms, with fun views across the rooftops of Phnom Penh, giving a really unique insight into city life for locals. Also great service, warm smiles in the morning, and good recommendations for restaurants etc. They also kept in touch with us while we went down to Sihanoukville, making sure we arrived safe, warning us of any tourist traps or security issues (bag snatchers in Sihanoukville) and again welcomed us warmly when we returned to Phnom Penh before flying out. It was a really nice way to end our trip, being welcomed at the door by Phannak, hardest working guest house manager I've met! And they keep the place so clean, constantly sweeping and polishing etc. It was a labour of love. I couldn't recommend it for a central, comfortable and affordable stay in Phnom Penh. Oh and if you're a fan of Elton John, he stayed there in 2006, in room 201!

Room Tip: Balcony rooms are a great way to feel amongst it, providing a view across the street, and across roo...

This guesthouse is spotless! Average sized rooms with tiled floors, nice a/cond and even a TV. The bathrooms are excellent too for this price point. Location is central and only a five minute walk to the river and a host of cheap eats and bars. The owner is not the most endearing guy on the planet, however I'm not there to make friends and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Try to get a lower level room as the stairs can be a bit much for some.
