“The Royal Guest House feels like home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2011

Stayed here for a week, became part of the furniture while people came and went. Room for US$12 great value, good aircon, nice bathroom and TV, wi-fi everywhere. Staff hepful and always friendly. I am older than the average backpacker and was travelling with my daughter and boyfriend and am used to more upmarket hotels but was very happy at the Royal and would recommend it.

Food was good and reasonable, transport available all the time and walking distance to market, shopping centre and riverside.

Room Tip: Pay for the aircon room, US$12 is great value

I had a big $10 room on the balcony for $9. It was very spacious, high ceiling, airy and nice. One big ceiling fan, no air con(not needed). Had a great working cable TV with some 60+ channels and clear picture and sound. Big nice bed and sheets and a nice blanket. Good shower although the shower head didn't stay in place on it's holder. Big bathroom. Having non-registered company can be troublesome, but the stairs to upstairs had it's own entrance, although closed at night(guarded by a sleeping guard leaning on the locked gate).

I you plan not to have non-registered company or eat here, this is a very nice choice to stay in. The door to the room went broke though, internet is expensive($1/r4000 compared to the r500 outside), water is expensive too, but can be obtained from outside. But I really did like the room and the TV. Staff was nice and helpful but the owner was not.

In terms of the rooms themselves, they were OK. We paid 12 dollars for a room with a (broken and very uncomfortable) double bed, AC and TV. The bathtub was broken so we had to shower on the bathroom floor and managed to get the price down to 12 from 15 because of this.
The place is family run and overcharges for EVERYTHING. The internet is a rip-off as is their water and other things they sell there. Breakfast there was terrible. I ordered a fruit salad and got a banana and half an orange. When I asked them where we could go for breakfast they could only recommend their restaurant.
Like many other travellers on this page, we made the mistake of getting our visas for Vietnam and Laos through them. They severely over-charged us for this service but, worst of all, they put the same entrance date on both visas (didn't ask us for this info. which of course we too overlooked, but if you are charging almost double, you could at least ask for basic information).
When we realized that our exit date in Vietnam is 2 days before we are due to fly out, which means we will either have to pay a fee or get an extension, the lady at the counter told us to go to Laos first instead of Vietnam. Thanks... They told us they were very sorry but that they could not reimburse any of our money for this mistake.
Terrible service.

i stayed in a double room with ac in the second floor.
the price was good and the staff provided solutions for all queries i had
outside there is always a tuk tuk parked so it was convenient to go anywhere
and was quite central, few minutes away from the riverside etc...
the room was big and toilet was spacious too
what i liked the most was that the place was very clean compared to the hotel i stayed at in siem reap.
and the curry i had in the restaurant below was fab
it was a great graduation trip and i would want to come again

They are located in the river front area, but a few blocks away, near Norodhom , a big avenue, so easy to find, near night life, museums, restaurants, etc.

Relatively quiet and clean, lots of services like free wifi and internet cafe, safety boxes, night time security, tv with too many channels, tour and bus ticket service, restaurant/cafe which I did not try. Professional service. Rooms near the top tend to be best as they are newly renovated, but that means a lot of stairs. About 8 to 10 dollars for a single fan room, I think a couple of dollars more for A.C., which is not needed this time of the year.

My Girlfriend and I had been traveling SE Asia for two months before we arrived in Phnom Pehn and decided to stay at this dodgy little guest house. First, when we arrived the young man behind the counter ignored me while he played on his iPhone until I finally managed to get his attention (this should have been the first clue). Our room was nice enough on first inspection, but was up a stair case off to the side of the main lobby. As our stay progressed, it went down hill,, FAST; with cockroaches in the building everywhere, and open condom wrappers under our bed! Additionally, the room was very noisy with dogs barking and what seemed like an endless stream of prostitutes entering the building!...lets not forget the cage like door they use as security that reminds you of something seen in S-21!..however, having been traveling for a while I was willing to overlook these things having stayed in dodgy places before.

What put the nail in the coffin here is when my Life was threatened in the Lobby, and my Girlfriend and I had to catch the next bus out of town! We purchased overnight bus tickets to Siem Riep upon our initial checkin, and were told to be in the lobby for 23:30 for pick up the next night. When we arrived at the lobby for pick up we had initially misplaced our Bus Ticket, even though the guy behind the counter had written records of when and what we purchased. We offered to purchase a new set of tickets, if they could put us on the bus we had originally intended. This should have resolved the issue, however, we were told this was not possible. Stepping outside we were confronted by the drunken, atrocious behaviour of a family member. Claiming that we had disrespected his family (in just what way remains an absolute mystery!), he proceeded to scream threats in both my face and then turned his unjustified fit of rage on my girlfriend. Through this ridiculous ordeal we had found our original bus tickets, however, this disgruntled family employee now shouted that these tickets would not be honored, and proceeded to call me an idiot for losing my ticket and that I was stuck in Phnom Pehn. As if this was not enough, the angry brother continued to threaten our lives and repeatedly stated that we were in HIS country, and we should watch our backs.

In the end, the young woman of the family did make the phonecall and set us up with connections on the bus - however, there were no seats available so we spent the next 7 hours sitting in the cargo hold ... yet somehow, this was just fine with us.. a small measure of how badly we wanted out of Phnom Pehn. As if this wasn't enough, the family kept our payment of the additional bus ticket that we didn't even need. Great business ethics.

For all travelers who seek enjoyment, without the threat imposed by this family of thugs, I suggest you STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE. This place sent us to Hell and back, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE ENDURE SUCH AN EXPERIENCE. I am glad to hear that we are not the only ones who have negative things to say... be wise, GO ELSEWHERE.

The Royal Guesthouse is not onl;y a great deal but offers so much to people traveling in Cambodia. Services include visa extensions, money exchange, internet stations, free wifi, tours and travel assistance, clean and reasonably priced accommodations, and a restaurant that offers great food delivered with a smile. The owners will go the extra mile to assure your stay is more than satisfactory and a staff that is helpful and friendly to all. Thumbs up!!!
