“Served its purpose - good budget hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

About 10 mins by tuk-tuk from riverside and main attractions, Lucky Star was a reasonable budget choice for our group. Everything was ok, no problems, breakfast had plenty of choice. For USD15-20 not a bad choice at all.

There are several hotels lucky star hotels at the area. Make sure you check in at Lucky Star 2 which is the newest one. The USD20 rooms are good value. Rooms are big, well lit, clean and have good wifi connection. Make sure you instruct them to give you a room with window. The front desk staff are not that good in English so extra patience is required. The location is just fine, a bit away from the tourist areas so extra budget is needed to go around city.

It is my first time traveling solo so the $15/night suits me just fine. With this rate, I know I have to always manage my expectations. This way, I won't be disappointed.

I stayed for 3 nights and its very convenient to the Olympic Supermarket, City Mall and Grocery Store. There's a nearby KFC too so for sure you won't be hungry if you are craving for something familiar.

Everyday, I have clean towels and nice bed. The aircon works well too. If you have valuables like laptop and you don't want to leave inside the room while you are away, you can always leave at the reception area and the lady is friendly and kind enough to guard it for you.

This hotel is about 15-20minutes ride by TukTuk. I paid $9 from the airport taxi when I arrive. If you'll take TukTuk and will go to National Museum and Royal Palace, you should pay only $3. The first time I went, the TukTuk driver charged me $5! The second time, the driver charged me only $3 so looks like this is the going rate!

If you can find a hotel much nearer to Sisowath Quay and with the same value ($15/night), then it is more convenient in terms of location. But if none and you are in a tight budget for this trip (like me cos i was solo), then Lucky Star Hotel will suit you just fine :)

Hotel is clean, staff speak good English and did not try and push any trips, tickets onto us. Very helpful when we asked questions about the town. $2 Tuk Tuk ($1 Moto) to riverside (don't pay anymore).
Location was okay, but on a busy function street with multiple weddings each night, was quite noisy.

Room Tip: Lift is slow, and not great views, so being higher is not much of an advantage here.

To save a little money on our trip we decided to stay a few days in lucky star.
It was clean and good value for money. rooms are ok,but not cosy at all. neighborhood could be a little dubious at night i wouldn' t want to walk there on my own. Not really nice restaurants, at walking distance, try the foodstalls.
It is a good option to save money but that would be the only reason for me to stay.

I paid $15 (US) per night for a large air conditioned room. It was clean, comfortable and the hot water worked. The front desk staff speak adequate English and were very helpful. I was asked if I wanted "boom boom" by the staff several times and declined. I will stay at this hotel when I return to Phnom Penh.

Room Tip: The top floor is best.

After reading some of the reviews of this hotel, I wonder at times why some people bother to leave the comfort and security of their own loungerooms.I am currently sitting at the desk of room 407, I am paying $12 AUD( keep in mind that this is the middle of the high season) a night for a HUGE room with one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in& 4( yes count them- four) luxurious pillows, aircon;fridge; T.V; free bottled water, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo& soap, bathTUB, daily cleaning, and friendly, efficient staff.
Yep, its a $1 moto or $2 tuk-tuk ride to the riverfront, but then, everywhere in PP is a $1 moto or $2 tuk-tuk ride from the river front, even the riverfront itself!Yes, there were 3 weddings last night, but all the noise stopped at 10pm on the dot,yes apparently there are some brothels in the street, not that I would have known, (its not exactly Bangala rd), yes, surprisingly enough some of the staff do not speak fluent english( funny that in SEA ay!)and to the guy who said there are no eating options, well you are right- other than some of the cheapest most delicious Khmer food going, there is no Maccas, KFC or Pizza Hut within walking distance, but there is a KFC thats a $2 tuk-tuk ride away you jerk. As I said earlier- I really wonder why some people leave the comfort of there own lounge room. Anyway, for you fair dinkum journeyors reading this review, in my opinion, this is the best value for money hotel I have stayed at anywhere in Indo China,SEA, Australia or the South Pacific in 8 years of fairly extensive travelling. This will now be my fulltime base in PP
